The new fall season always bring many debuting bands to Modernista. One of our latests discoveries, The Jared Land Band, is perfect to set the mood right before the weekend. They put together a groovy and eclectic mix of styles for an intoxicating night of original music and well selected covers. They are expected to be a Modernista regular, but you don't need to wait to catch them up!

The Jared Lang Band combines hip hop, jazz, funk, and rock - sometimes exciting and energetic, sometimes downtempo and cool. A group of excellent musicians who are all established in their own right, Jared’s original music is influenced by artists such as Portishead, The Cinematic Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Massive Attack, the Herbaliser and Miles Davis.

贾里德·朗(Jared Lang)乐队结合了嘻哈、爵士乐、放克和摇滚乐——有时令人兴奋，充满活力，有时节奏低沉，很酷。贾里德的原创音乐受到了波蒂黑德(Portishead)、电影管弦乐队(The Cinematic Orchestra)、赫比·汉考克(HerbieHancock)、大举进攻乐队(Massive Attack)、The Herbaliser 乐队和迈尔斯·戴维斯(Miles Davis)等艺术家的影响，他们是一批各具特色的优秀音乐家。

JARED LANG

PIANO / KEYS  钢琴 / 键盘

After studying jazz piano for a year at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, Jared Lang returned to his home country South Africa to complete his bachelor’s degree in jazz piano and consequently a master’s degree in composition. He was a music lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology and Rhodes University, in addition to teaching at various schools and doing numerous gigs, both solo and with jazz, funk, rock and pop bands. Jared also had a residency at the Danat Hotel in the UAE where he performed with The Mix and Ruby Bamboo, and has composed music for film and art installations. Since moving to Beijing in 2020, Jared has performed with Poetry x Music, Kanala Music and The Real Deal at venues including Modernista, Temple, Jianghu Bar, Aotu Space, Camera Stylo, Inception and Tokyo Lounge. 

在美国波士顿著名的伯克利音乐学院学习爵士钢琴一年之后，贾里德·朗回到他 的祖国南非完成他的爵士钢琴学士学位，并最终获得作曲硕士学位。他是茨瓦尼 科技大学和罗德斯大学的音乐讲师，除此之外，他还在不同的学校教书，并参加 了无数独奏和爵士、放克、摇滚和流行乐队的演出。贾里德还曾在阿联酋的达纳 特(Danat)酒店居住，在那里他用混音和红宝石竹表演，并为电影和艺术装置 创作了音乐。自 2020 年移居北京以来，贾里德在 Modernista 餐厅、Temple 东景缘、江湖酒吧、 凹凸空间、糖房咖啡、Inception 酒吧和东京酒廊等场所表演了诗歌 x 音乐、卡纳 拉音乐和真正的交易。 

TEA LONCAR

SINGER 歌手

One of Beijing’s most talented and sought-after vocalists, Tea has performed at many venues and festivals around Beijing, including The Peninsula Hotel, Inception, Modernista, Tokyo Lounge, Fête de la Musique, the Beijing Pizza Festival, and the Croatian embassy. She enjoys mixing fresh R&B, hip-hop, pop and soul with jazz and acoustic-driven grooves, and is committed to bringing a blend of these contemporary sounds to Beijing. 

茶·洛尼亚尔(Tea Lončar)在她家乡克罗地亚的萨格勒布大学音乐学院曾学习过歌剧演唱。在过去 7 年中，她一直在北京生活，参与各种流派的表演，包括摇滚、迪斯科、节奏蓝调、 灵魂乐和爵士乐。除去在 10 人组迪斯科乐队”The Flip Side”演唱了两年之外，她还与西班牙 摇滚乐队”Ginko”、爵士乐队”Tea and the Bags”以及灵魂蓝调乐队“Zohar”一同演出。 

作为北京最有才华与最受欢迎的歌手之一，她曾在北京的许多场所以及节日中演出，包括半 岛酒店(The Peninsula Hotel)、盗梦空间酒吧(Inception)、摩登尼斯塔酒吧(Modernista)、 东京酒廊(Tokyo Lounge)、夏至音乐节(Fête de la Musique)、北京比萨节和克罗地亚大 使馆。她喜欢将最新颖的节奏蓝调、嘻哈、流行乐、灵魂爵士乐和原声驱动的旋律混合在一 起，并致力于将这些当代融合音乐带到北京。 

DEAN MONGERIO

SAX 萨克斯 

Originally from New York, Dean is an award-winning international recording artist and producer, with two Top 25 Billboard Smooth Jazz Radio singles and a Top 15 single on Smoothjazz.com Radio chart from his all-original album “Inter/change”. Before moving to Beijing in 2017, Dean lived in London for 8 years touring and performing in over 150 cities at famous venues all over the UK such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Pizza Express Jazz Club, the Edinburgh Playhouse, and the Liverpool Echo Arena. 

He’s been recorded on over 20 albums of various styles, and has performed and/or recorded with famous jazz artists such as Rufus Reid, Marcus Printup, Sam Rivers, Ed Calle, and Danny Gottlieb, as well as contemporary jazz artists Chieli Minucci, Marc Antoine, Chris Standring, Mike Phillips, Craig Chaquico, Oli Silk, and Darren Rahn. His work with mainstream artists include three-time Grammy Nominee Ryan Shaw, The Temptations, The O’Jays, Steve Cropper, The Drifters, Khristian Dentley (Take 6), and Tony Battaglia (Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Mandy Moore, Shinedown). 

His recording collaborations also put him alongside artists such as David Sanborn, Mike Miller, and Brandon Fields, and was a specially featured soloist for the World Saxophone Collaboration in 2020, including Tom Scott, Gerald Albright, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Derek Brown, Jeff Coffin, Jeff Kashiwa, and Mindi Abair. 

Dean is also a well-respected clinician, having done multiple masterclass and performance tours throughout China including Beijing, Hohhot, Erdos, Jinan, Anyang, Tanfang, Qingdao, Yantai, Weifang, Datong, and Nanjing. He’s been a guest instructor and performer for the annual Beijing International Saxophone Music Art Week, and was appointed as “Guest Professor of the Weifang City Musician’s Association (Saxophone) for his outstanding contribution to his art form”.

CONNOR CHAPPELLE

BASS 贝斯 

Originally from the UK, bassist Connor Chappelle been playing bass for more than 15 years. He played with numerous artists in the Merseyside area in England before moving to Beijing, where he has performed at venues such as Soi Baochao and Lush. Incorporating advanced techniques like syncopated ghost notes and slap into his playing, Connor is primarily a funk bass player, influenced by the likes of Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai) and Marcus Miller, to more recent players such as Vulfpeck’s Joe Dart. This has contributed to his impeccable sense of rhythm along with his lyrical basslines. 

来自英国的贝斯手康纳·查普勒已经演奏贝斯 15 年多了。在移居北京之前，他曾在英国默西塞德郡与众多艺术家一起演出，在北京他在宝钞仓库酒吧和路徒酒 吧等地演出。康纳主要是一个放克贝斯手，在他的演奏中融入了一些先进的技术，如切分音鬼 音和拍子，他受到斯图尔特·赞德(Stuart Zender)(Jamiroquai 乐队)和马库斯·米 勒(Marcus Miller)等人，以及Vulfpeck乐队的的乔·达特(Joe Dart)等更近期的贝斯手的影响。这对于他无可挑剔的节奏感以及他的抒情贝斯旋律很有帮助。 

GUY MABANZA

DRUMS 鼓 

Hailing from the Congo, drummer Guy Mabanza's playing is the perfect combination of groove, technique, and musicality. He studied at the acclaimed Freejazz school of music in his home country under Congolese drummers Evradone Lahaluma and Francis Mulio, and performed with various ensembles related to the institute as well as with other bands including Adonaï before moving to China. 

Citing influences including Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers and Calvin Rodgers, he currently performs around Beijing with the band Wordpro. An extremely versatile musician, his previous performances include playing drums with Kanala Music at the opening event for Beijing-Africa Week at Modernista and playing orchestral percussion with the Kunming International Philharmonic under the baton of conductor Oleg Sheremeta. 

鼓手盖伊·马班萨来自刚果，他的演奏是律动、技术和音乐性的完美结合。他曾 在刚果著名的自由爵士音乐学院学习，师从刚果鼓手埃夫拉多内·拉哈卢马 (Evradone Lahaluma)和弗朗西斯·穆利奥(Francis Mulio)，并与该学院相关 的多个乐团以及其他乐队(包括 Adonaï 乐队)合作演出，之后来到中国。由于受到戴夫·万科尔(Dave Weckl)、丹尼斯·钱伯斯(Dennis Chambers)和 卡尔文·罗杰斯(Calvin Rodgers)的影响，他目前在北京与Wordpro乐队合作 演出。作为一个多才多艺的音乐家，他之前的表演包括在 Modernista 餐厅举办的 北京-非洲周开幕式上用卡纳拉音乐打鼓，以及在指挥家奥列格·谢雷梅塔(Oleg Sheremeta)指挥下与昆明国际爱乐乐团一起演奏打击乐。
