A one-stop pet shopping mall has commenced trial operations in Longhua District, becoming the largest of its kind in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Situated in Kaihoda Plaza in Dalang, Longhua District, the 20,000-square-meter facility covers the full life cycle of pets, including medical care, elderly care, and funeral services.
The mall will regularly host life science exhibitions and extracurricular education programs for primary and secondary school students, feature designated pet quarantine areas, and develop cross-border digital trading and live-streaming platforms to support merchants in expanding their sales channels.
The Shenzhen Small Animal Life Science Museum, located within the mall and recently opened to the public, attracts over 500 visitors daily. Additionally, the city’s first firefly science exhibition will be held at the venue from May 20 through the end of summer vacation.
Looking ahead, the mall plans to establish a pet industry talent training center aimed at enhancing the professional standards and skills of industry practitioners, positioning itself as a benchmark for innovation in China's pet sector.
Shenzhen Leads Rapid Growth in China’s Pet Economy
China's pet industry is undergoing rapid expansion. According to a Goldman Sachs report, in 2024, the number of pets in China surpassed that of children under the age of four for the first time.
Shenzhen is at the forefront of this trend. The city has over 500,000 pet dogs and cats, with owners primarily aged 40 and below, according to the China Development Institute, a Shenzhen-based think tank.
As of December 2024, Shenzhen was home to more than 96,000 pet-related enterprises, generating a total revenue of 10 billion yuan, data from the city’s market regulator shows.
Pet Medical and Lifestyle Services Expand
The thriving pet economy has driven significant growth in pet healthcare. By the end of November 2024, Shenzhen had 508 registered pet medical institutions—a 3.3% increase year-on-year—along with over 1,700 licensed veterinarians.
The city now includes more than 50 pet-friendly shopping malls and over 1,000 pet-welcoming restaurants. Additionally, over 10 specialized pet parks have been established to support pet owners.
