Data from Mexico’s national statistics agency INEGI and industry groups shows that 19% of light vehicles sold in Mexico in 2025 were "Made in China"—equivalent to 1 out of every 5 new cars. This milestone confirms Mexico as the world’s top importer of Chinese-manufactured vehicles, marking a leapfrog growth in the penetration of Chinese auto brands in the Latin American market.

Five years ago, Chinese-owned brands accounted for less than 1% of Mexico’s auto market. Today, they have become a core force. BYD stood out with 85,000 units sold in 2025, representing one-third of total Chinese brand sales in Mexico. 新莱昂州汽车产业集群(CLAUT)主任曼努埃尔・蒙托亚(Manuel Montoya)向《改革报》(Reforma)分析,中国产汽车在墨热销的核心原因是 “极具吸引力的价格”,这得益于中国成熟的制造业生态与低成本优势。
Manuel Montoya, director of the Nuevo León Automotive Cluster (CLAUT), told Reforma that the core reason for the popularity of Chinese-made cars in Mexico is their "very attractive prices," supported by China’s mature manufacturing ecosystem and low-cost advantages.
“像福特、通用这样在墨西哥和中国均有生产基地的传统品牌,可选择从中国进口一定配额的车型,以中国市场的价格在墨销售。” 蒙托亚举例道,“比如福特领界(Ford Territory)这类 SUV,在墨西哥的售价极具竞争力,直接刺激了消费需求。”
"Traditional brands [such as Ford and GM] that manufacture both in Mexico and China have the option of bringing a quota of vehicles from China to Mexico at Chinese prices," Montoya explained. "That’s why you have an SUV like the Ford Territory with a super competitive price in Mexico, which encourages people to buy."

In addition, Montoya emphasized that the improved quality of Chinese-made cars is another key factor: "They not only have very attractive prices but are also very well made." For instance, BYD’s EVs are priced significantly lower than similar models from other brands, making them a cost-effective choice for Mexican consumers transitioning to new energy vehicles.
