Job Summary

A Lead Chemist, or a Chemistry Project Leader, to drive projects

Key Responsibility

• Consistently demonstrates the ability to make inventive contributions towards new chemical target structures or templates for the project and employs sound judgment in the evaluation and strategic decision making around early screening or literature hits. Track records of delivery of milestones/pushing project forward. Has the responsibility for timely preparation of patent applications with a defined patent strategy. Together with project team, designs an appropriate project strategy (e.g. screening cascade, therapeutic target profile adaptation to project related features or aspects).

• Regularly demonstrates the ability to serve as a highly experienced Lead Chemist for Drug Discovery Programs. Is a strong Chemistry Project Leader in setting the overall strategy and direction for the project team. Upon required, can function as a full project leader.

• Demonstrates and applies independent thought and creativity in projects and programs. Solid publications record in peer-reviewed journals or patents filling. Effective scientific communicator both inside and outside company. Presents to senior management and at national/international forums.

• Presents scientific and project objectives and results to multidisciplinary audiences and (decision making) management boards. Establishes and maintains an effective network across disciplines to drive projects. Keep a direct and clear scientific dialogue with the Chemistry Leadership Team. Has good moderation skills and creates an effective meeting culture: short, focused, on time, with right attendance, brief minutes & action items. 

• Can act as a project's drug discovery mentor for scientist working in a different function. As a Lead Chemist, leads a high performance chemistry team. Assigns clear roles, provides and solicits feedback and actively assesses performance.

• Upon request, contributes to due diligence activities. Successfully proposes new targets and projects, contributes to the assessment of new project proposals. May act as a disease area expert representing medicinal chemistry department.

• Makes contribution that impact department strategy on a local level. Is a seasoned drug hunter and can act as a consultant across projects. As a Lead Chemist, acts as an entrepreneur and chemistry ambassador - drives the project. Where needed, acts as the single accountable decision maker for the chemistry team.

Education/Qualifications

• A PhD in organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry

• Have additional post-doctoral experience (> 5 years) in medicinal chemistry research preferably within the pharmaceutical industry

• A goal-oriented team player and relish working in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment with a core ability to lead teams

• Have excellent organizational skills, are a pro-active knowledge sharer and are fluent in English 

• Strong publication record in development of synthetic methodologies and /or total synthesis of natural products

• Have a clear track record in moving projects from target assessment through clinical lead and candidate phases with clear contributions, problem solving and impact

• Fluent in reading, writing and speaking English

• Have demonstrated a strong determination to succeed and have a dedication to creating novel solutions for challenging problems

• Are passionate and pro-active about your further education in the areas of pharmacology, disease biology and all related scientific disciplines in drug discovery
