Ph.D. positions in Dr. Yi Zheng’s lab at Syracuse University (microfluidics and stem cells)

Dr. Yi Zheng’s research group in the Department of Biomedical & Chemical Engineering at Syracuse University is now seeking applications for two Ph.D. positions with an anticipated start date of Fall 2023. The students will be supported through a research assistantship, which covers tuitions and offers a competitive living stipend. The students are expected to design and conduct experiments, analyze experimental results, and publish their researches in highprofile journals. Interested candidates should send their inquiries with a detailed CV to Dr. Zheng via email.

Those with experience in biological cell culture, microfabrication, bioinformatics, and tissue engineering are particularly encouraged to apply. Preferences are given to the candidates with publication records. Selected candidates should expect a Zoom call request from Dr. Zheng.

Dr. Yi Zheng:

Dr. Zheng received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Toronto in 2014; and worked as a postdoctoral researcher and an assistant research scientist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor from 2014 to 2022. He has authored more than 30 journal articles including Nature, Nature Materials, Cell Stem Cell, Science Advances, Nature Communications and Nature Protocols. His research has been recognized as a major breakthrough in related fields, and widely highlighted by public media, including Nature, National Public Radio, MIT Technology Review, BBC News, Chemical & Engineering News, Washington Times, ScienceDaily etc.

Research:

Biomedical researches using established cell lines and animal model systems have achieved tremendous success in improving our understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms and facilitating the discovery of new medicines. Nevertheless, there is growing realization that information obtained from simple dish-cultured cell lines and other animals can not be directly extrapolated to human systems. Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), under proper culture conditions, can self-organize into structures that resemble the in vivo anatomy and physiology of certain human tissues, which can potentially revolutionize current biomedical researches by providing a more human-relevant setting. In the Zheng Lab, we build highly controllable and reproducible human biosystems using stem cells and a wide array of engineering approaches, and apply these biosystems for new discoveries in human development, disease etiology and regenerative medicine.

Environment:

The Zheng Lab is located in the brand-new lab space in the Center for Science and Technology at Syracuse University. The space is dedicated to the Bioinspired Institute, an institution-wide research cluster initiative to promote world-class interdisciplinary research, and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Students have numerous opportunities to seek collaborations within the institute and grow professionally through participation in student development programs offered by Syracuse University.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree in engineering, applied physics, cell biology or developmental biology. Applicants with a master's degree or a publication record are preferred.

  • Passion and perseverance in the pursuit of academic success.

  • Good work ethic with the ability to work independently as well as in a group.

  • Preferred: hand-on experience with microfluidics and cell culture.

Research directions:

  • Stem cell-derived human developmental models
  • Microengineered organ models (organoids)
  • Single cell genomics and bioinformatics
  • Biomimetic microenvironment for disease modeling
  • Mechanobiology
