During the outbreak of the global epidemic, ships stopped and jumped, ports of many countries were closed and containers were overstocked. If the epidemic was not well controlled, the liner transportation industry would lose 23.4 billion US dollars in 2020. At present, global shipping companies, ports and docks are facing unprecedented challenges and will continue to bear pressure.
Maersk gene is sued for early termination of cooperation with the US terminal
According to foreign media reports, Maersk terminated its cooperation with GCT in advance, and will no longer attach to the wharf of Staten Island under GCT, New York, from May 1, 2020, but to Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, operated by APM terminals. Maersk's move was sued by terminal operator GCT.

On April 20, GCT filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court seeking to enforce the agreement with Maersk since 2015. The lawsuit said that if the other party breaches the agreement, GCT's Wharf on Staten Island, New York "will no longer be a problem of going concern, but a threat to its survival.". GCT is seeking an emergency restraining order to prevent the Danish airline from leaving before the contract expires.
GCT said that the agreement between the two parties is valid until December 31, 2022. If they want to terminate the agreement in advance, they need to give six months' notice, while Maersk only gives 20 days' notice to GCT.

According to the analysis of GCT, APM is the direct competitor of GCT. Maersk withdrew from GCT's Wharf and chose to attach to the port of Elizabeth of APM, which is obviously to transfer its business to its associated APM company for the economic benefit of APM Wharf Company.
It is understood that the business between Maersk's shipping brand and GCT in Staten Island accounts for 60% of the terminal's container shipping business and 46% of its container cargo throughput including the local barge business.

In a letter dated April 10, Maersk officially issued a notice to GCT's Staten Island Wharf in New York to terminate the docking of the ship, saying that its vessel would stop attaching to the wharf on May 1.
Maersk offered GCT a $5.5 million settlement (about $2.1 million in early termination fees, and $3.4 million in additional additions due to the uncertainty of the outbreak) to terminate the New York terminal transaction with GCT as soon as possible, which the operator has rejected, and is seeking legal assistance through a federal court in New York to keep the Danish railway afloat operate.
A spokesman for Maersk said: "we will not speculate about what may happen in different situations, but this decision is not easy to make. Unfortunately, GCT is in breach of confidentiality obligations due to open settlement conditions, but Maersk will continue to provide reliable transportation services to customers in the current environment in which some carriers seek force majeure and other protective measures. "
GCT, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, operates four docks, two in British Columbia in western Canada, and two in Staten Island and New Jersey in the United States. GCT's Staten Island Terminal in New York is expected to generate a total revenue of $124.7 million and operating profit of $30.3 million this year. If Maersk service is terminated, it is expected to generate a loss of $7 million in 2020.
