A how and when guide for mixing drinks

There are many ways to mix a cocktail; over the next two weeks we’ll be focusing on the most common methods Stir & Shake. Each of these methods are used for very different reasons and produce very different styles of drink, it’s important to understand why each method is used to be able to apply the correct method when creating your own drinks.

Stir

The stirring method for drinks is normally used for Spirits forward drinks. There are a couple of reasons for this:

It allows you greater control of the level of dilution in the drink. For Spirit forward drinks this essential, over diluted and you have a weak and flat drink, under diluted and all of the bright flavours hidden in the spirits used may still be hiding behind the alcohol.

Helps maintain the clarity of the drink. This means there are no ice chips, bubbles or cloudiness disrupting the final presentation of your beautifully bright drink whether it be served up (in a stem glass without ice) or down (in a short glass with ice).

We will teach you how to stir with a classic Martini using The West Winds Cutlass

Method:

1) Add Ice to a Martini Glass to pre chill it

2) In a separate large straight sided glass (mixing glass or Pint glass) add

60ml The West Winds Cutlass

15ml Dry Vermouth

3) ¾ fill mixing glass with ice

4) Pick up bar spoon between index and middle fingers, and ease the spoon down in between the ice and the glass using your thumb for stability

5) Imagine your index finger is pushing the spoon away from you around the side of the glass. Then with your middle finer pull the spoon back towards you around the other side of the glass completing a circle

*This can also be done between you middle finger and ring finger depending on what feels more comfortable.

6) Keep stirring until drink smells “bright” you will be able to smell when a stirred drink hits its right dilution, quick taste to double check.

7) Empty ice out of Martini glass.

8) Using a Julep strainer strain Martini into glass.

9) Garnish with Olives, a slice of Capsicum or Rosemary sprig.
