The China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) is currently the longest-running and largest comprehensive international trade fair with the largest product variety, the largest number of attending buyers from the widest range of countries and regions, and the best transaction results. It is hence acclaimed as “China’s Number One Fair”.
At the first stop of the itinerary, the delegation was invited to attend the Opening Reception of the 135th Session of China Import and Export Fair and visited its exhibition venues.

On April 15th, the Sino-German Industry Exchange Luncheon and the UNIDO Fourth Industrial Revolution Alliance Expert Panel on Digital Talent, jointly hosted by UNIDO ITPO Beijing and IWS, were held during the Canton Fair.

Professor Yabin WU, Head of UNIDO ITPO Beijing, said in his speech that Germany was the first country to propose the concept of Industry 4.0 and has the largest number of hidden champions in the world, while China possesses the most comprehensive industrial categories globally, which means that there is ample room for complementary advantages and synergistic development between China and Germany in the global value and industrial chains.

Peter NUßBAUM, Secretary-General of IWS, said in his speech that whether it’s Chinese companies investing in Germany or German companies investing in China, both sides hope to deepen bilateral cooperation, and that IWS is willing to provide assistance and support.

To strengthen investment exchanges, economic cooperation and trade between China and Germany, representatives from local governments, including Guanyu ZHAO, Deputy Director of Xicheng District Commerce Bureau, Haibo ZHANG, Deputy Director of Guangzhou Municipal Commerce Bureau, Qingcai ZHA, Director of Shenzhen office of Jinan Municipal People’s Government, Mei LI, Standing Committee Member of Wenjiang District Municipal Committee of Chengdu and Minister of Publicity Department of the District Committee, Yaping MAO, Standing Committee Member of Taicang Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Communist Party Working Committee of the High-tech Zone, and Xike SUN, Deputy Director of Investment and Promotion Bureau of Administrative Committee of Henan Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone, briefed on their cities and investment promotion policies.
UNIDO is always committed to assisting all member states, especially developing countries, in achieving inclusive and sustainable industrial development. As member states of UNIDO, China and Germany are actively promoting digital transformation and “green transformation”.
With the guidance and support of UNIDO ITPO Beijing, Beijing Bohaidi Information Technology Co., Ltd. has joined forces with 15 partners to establish the “Expert Panel on Digital Talent” under the UNIDO Fourth Industrial Revolution Alliance, to jointly promote the sustainable development of global digital talent training and digital industry.
During the Canton Fair, Mbairo Tog-Naye RAMADJI, Vice Minister of Vocational Education, Handicrafts, and Microfinance in Chad, delivered a speech, and together with others, released the UNIDO Fourth Industrial Revolution Alliance Expert Panel on Digital Talent Action Plan 2024-2028, which includes five measures: establishing international digital talent development bases in developing countries worldwide, cultivating international digital talents, building a global think tank of digital talent experts, organizing global digital talent competitions, and publishing global digital talent research reports.
Thomas LIMBERGER, IWS board member and CEO of SilverArrow Capital Group, Professor Yabin WU, Head of UNIDO ITPO Beijing, and Kangping LIN, Chairman of Beijing Bohaidi Information Technology Co., Ltd., presented certificates to members of the expert group.
During their stay in Guangzhou, government representatives including Xin HUANG, Level II Bureau Rank Official of Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province, and Huilin QIU, Level II Bureau Rank Official of Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, met with the delegation. Peter HELIS, Director of Global Investment and Promotion of Guangzhou Development Zone Investment and Promotion Bureau, introduced relevant policies.
The delegation also visited China’s leading smart electric vehicle (EV) company XPENG Motors and agricultural technology company XAG.
This year, “low-altitude economy” was mentioned for the first time in Chinese government work report. Local governments across the country are actively planning it and releasing relevant plans and policies, to accelerate its commercialization. At a time when the German company Volkswagen announced a €2.5 billion investment to jointly develop new EV models with XPENG Motors, the delegation also visited XPENG Motors, experiencing the rapid development of China’s smart EV industry and learning about flying cars which recieved widespread media coverage recently.

Currently, addressing global food supply has become a major challenge for the international community. UNIDO also pays close attention to achieving a world free from hunger through industrialization, technology and knowledge transfer, and investment in agribusiness, and considers smart agri-food as one of the key tracks of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The delegation visited XAG to learn how its drones enhance agricultural productivity and their application scenarios, such as precision agriculture, smart irrigation, and agricultural drones.
The second stop of the delegation’s visit was to Shenzhen, where they visited BYD, a leader in new energy vehicles, and Honor, a global leading provider of smart terminals.
The automotive industry is now gradually transitioning towards “electrification, connectivity, and intelligence”. Especially in China, BYD surpassed Tesla in cumulative sales for the full year of 2022, making it the world’s largest new energy vehicle enterprise. This has also contributed to the current pattern of “New Three Items” of “lithium batteries, new energy vehicles, and solar cells”. The delegation visited the BYD exhibition hall, where they witnessed its puncture test and held discussions.

Going forward, UNIDO ITPO Beijing will continue to work with global partners to promote investment and strengthen technological exchanges, in a bid to facilitate industrial exchanges as well as economic cooperation and trade between China and other countries.
