The Grove Spiced Rum in handcrafted by Master Distiller James in Margaret River, Western Australia. Produced in artisanal small batches, from local sun-drenched Australian sugarcane and some of the world’s best spices. The aroma is a hit of vanilla, and the smooth palate filled with rounded spices, a hint of citrus and a lengthy finish. Copper pot distilled and slowly aged in 200L American Oak Barrels, Vanilla pods, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg are then left to macerate in the barrel for up to 4 weeks, allowing for a slow, natural infusion process – then bottled for your drinking pleasure!
Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after Saffron, as growing the vanilla seed pods (beans) is labor-intensive. Madagascar produces 75% of vanilla beans globally and are a luxury we’re lucky to have in The Grove Spiced rum. Vanilla Beans are currently priced at between USD $475-500 per kilo!
Cinnamon has been a prized spice, and featured in writings citing both medicinal uses and as flavoring since 2000BC. Cassia is the more accessible form, but as is the style of The Grove, our Spiced Rum features Cinnamon Verum. From Egypt to China, Sri Lanka to Australia, its versatility is a favorite in desserts, cocktails and spiced rum alike!
Nutmeg is native to Indonesia’s Molucca Islands – commonly referred to as the Spice Islands. It’s divided into two parts – mace on the outside of the seed, nutmeg on the inside. Over the past 6 centuries wars have been fought over this spice, and it has since been seeded in countries around the world. It’s also a favourite for both cooking and medical uses – fun fact, in large enough doses, nutmeg can be a hallucinogenic and an anti-inflammatory agent.
Cloves, like nutmeg, are native to the Molucca Islands. Known for their powerful aroma and intense warmth to anything they’re added to. Most interestingly, cloves have long been used to aid in dentistry as they have local anesthetic properties. Their antibacterial & antiviral properties make them an excellent addition to winter drinks too.
Oranges probably originated around the south-west China and north-west India regions. They have been cultivated around China for several thousand years. The Grove Spiced Rum is finished off with oil from Australian orange zests added before bottling, creating layered complexity with this warm, rich citrus.
How to drink?
We’re proud that The Grove Spiced rum is delicious when enjoyed neat, on the rocks, with your favourite mixer or in a cocktail.
For a simple yet delicious option, we would highly recommend mixing with Bundaberg Gingerbeer, or Capi Cola – just add a wedge of lime to garnish.
Our cocktail of choice coming into the winter months would be a Spiced Rum Hot Toddy.
