Ever wondered why you see
so much celebration of the pineapple from hospitality professionals?
The pineapple is the international symbol of hospitality.
So how did this juicy, sweet, delicious fruit become the symbol of an entire industry?
Well there are two stories.
The first tale centers – as so many stories do – around renowned explorer Christopher Columbus who sailed the seas in the 15th Century. His adventurous spirit took him to the Caribbean Islands in 1493 where he discovered a deserted village with an abundance of pineapples. With the rarity of fresh fruit and sugar in his homeland, the royal family was thrilled with his discovery. It took the Europeans another 200 years before they were successfully able to grow pineapples locally. This helped solidify the pineapple as a symbol of royal privilege and luxury. Whilst the royals were hoarding the pineapples in Europe, the American colonies were being settled. Even the fasted ships struggled to deliver pineapples to the colonies before it rotted, as the voyage was hot and humid. The low supply and high demand meant that if a hostess was able to obtain a pineapple for her dinner table, visitors would know that no expense had been spared to make them feel welcome.
The second version of how the pineapple became so revered, is that in Colonial America, ship captains would return from the Caribbean and spear a pineapple on their front gate. This symbolized that they had returned safely and were ready to share their stories and their treasures with their friends and neighbors. It is an authentic hospitality centered on reconnecting with your community and sharing the best with your guests. As this tradition grew, colonial innkeepers began to carve pineapples into doorknockers and signposts to show that you were welcome.
