When Borders Gain the Centrality: The “Borderland” between Asia and the Hispanic World
Utrecht University in Utrecht, the Netherlands
July 6-9, 2017
The contact of Asia and the Hispanic World began in the second half of the sixteenth century with the Spanish Colonization of the Philippines. Since then, the movement of people and things in and out has created a borderland, in which intercultural connections become the norm.
The discussions of our seminar center on the mapping and explorations of the Asian-Hispanic borderland. While the powers and legacies of empire, wars and modern capitals have channeled the transnational connections, we focus on the role(s) of culture, more specifically, how culture is shaped and in turn, helps to shape this hybrid land.
When borders gain the paradoxical centrality, new stories and pathways emerge. We invite papers that explore:
▪ Direct and/or Indirect Cultural Contacts between Asia and the Hispanic World
▪ Travels and Translations;
▪ Making and Remaking of Identities;
▪ Colonialism, Migration, Post-colonialism;
▪ Paradigms of Intercultural Contacts, including but not limited to “transculturation,” “hybrid cultures,” “intersystems,” “originary syncretism,” “scapes.”
We invite proposals for 20-minute presentations on these or other aspects of Asian-Hispanic communications. The languages of the seminar will be Spanish and English. This seminar is part of the American Comparative Literature Association’s 2017 Annual Meeting. Please submit your proposals online via (http://acla.org/) by Sept. 23, 2016.
