Y2K就是“Year 2000 Problem”的缩写，它指由于计算机程序设计的一些问题，使得计算机在处理2000年1月1日以后的日期和时间时出现bug，导致网络崩溃，这场大型的科技危机成为了千禧年到来的标志，一提到“千年虫”Y2K，就让人对那个1993年至 2003年之间出现的文化潮流现象记忆深刻。
所以后来Y2K演变成一种描述时尚风格的词就用来特指上世纪九十年代初至二十一世纪初的视觉感官文化。其萌芽之时恰逢互联网泡沫的巅峰、以及新旧世纪交替的时机，这一连串的社会背景也让Y2K从一开始诞生就充满了超现实主义和未来感，怪诞的病毒式美学深刻吸引着当时内心叛逆、对科技时代充满憧憬的年轻人群。
