There is a 4 square-meter shop on Enning Road in Guangzhou, where lies hundreds of bronzes. Under the pale light, the delicacy and the stories of the craftsmanship cannot be covered up by the rust and gloss on the bronzes. The craftsman’s name is Su Guangwei, who is a native of Xiguan and a municipal successor of bronze process in Xiguan, guangzhou.

In 1949, Su Guangwei was born in a room under the arcade on Enning Road. In his early years, the sound of clank had always existed in his world, because every family in Xiguan had more or less bronzes in their houses before 1958, especially the rich families, who usually prepared a set of bronze pots and pans. Therefore, there was a popular saying goes that Suzhou’s mold and Guangzhou’s hand, which means the skills were from Suzhou while the craftsmen were from Guangzhou. There were nearly one hundred craftsmen in Guangzhou when it reached the peak.

In ancient time, every family uses bronze containers, but few people have ever seen the real ones. Around 1958, people donated their bronzes in order to be in coordinated with the policy to support the nation construction. From then on, the bronzes faded out of people’s families in Xiguan, and with the craftsmen changed their careers, the traditional craftsmanship had been lost, while Su Guangwei didn’t.

Time flies, in 1988 there was a policy to set the bronze free, which was a perfect opportunity for Su Guangwei. So he started his dream in a 4-quare-meter shop and named it after his father as “Tiancheng Bronze”.

From the first day when his shop was born, Su Guangwei took his bag visiting the old neighbors on the Enning Road and going to the flea market for bronzes, then he went back to his shop and scrubbed the bronzes as moulds. Years have passed, the clank of bronzes emerges again.

He has passed the sixty of the stages, which cannot fully support his labor, so his son started learning it. The ways of doing things are totally different between them. The father is cautious on everything while the son is quite mavericks, so there are always disparities. While to Su Guangwei’s surprise, the business has been better and better, which assured him a lot. After all, his aim is to let more people know this craft.

There are numerous people who are just the same with Su Guangwei, holding faith on bronzes, and persisting in doing it with toughness, or bold enough to put their new spirits in it with spread and flourish. The arts of process mingling with the life experience are the things can be built to last, which we call it craftsmanship.
