What to do in an earthquake
在地震中做什么
Earthquakes always happen suddenly, so it is difficult to warn people about them. Usually people have little or no idea about what to do during an earthquake, so here is some advice:
地震总是发生得很突然，所以很难给予人们预警。通常人们很少知道甚至都不知道在地震时做什么。因此这里有一些建议：

Inside
在室内
1. Do not jump out of high buildings.
不要从高层建筑向外跳。
2. Hide under a table. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture. Keep clear of fires.
躲在桌子下面。远离窗户和笨重的家具。避开火（源）。
3. Leave the building quickly when the ground stops shaking, but do not use the lift.
当地面停止晃动时，迅速离开建筑物，但不要使用电梯。
4. Keep calm, especially when you are with other people. Be brave and be helpful.
保持镇静，尤其是身边还有其他人的时候。要勇敢，乐于助人。

Outside
在户外
1. Move away from buildings, because parts of a building may fall on you.
远离建筑物，因为部分建筑物可能会落到你身上。
2. Do not stand near street lights or under lines.
不要站在路灯附近或者电线下面。
3. Stay away from bridges and trees. If you are in a bus or car, stay in it.
远离桥梁和树木。如果你在公共汽车上或小汽车内，待在里面。
4. In the mountains, be careful of falling rocks.
在山区要当心滚落的岩石。
5. On a beach, run away from the sea and move quickly to higher ground.
在沙滩上，跑离大海并快速向更高处转移。
In short, follow what you learnt in school. You can be safe and you can also help save others.
总之，按照在学校所学到的知识去做，你可能会安全，还可能帮着救别人。

We were having dinner at home when the earthquake happened. The room started to shake and before we knew what was happening, Father shouted to everyone to get under the kitchen table. We all sat on the floor under the table and waited. When the ground stopped shaking, we got up and we weren’t hurt. We couldn’t get out of the room, because the door wouldn’t open. My father called for help on his mobile phone, and in three hours, people came to help us. They opened the door. We got up and left our flat.
当地震发生时，我们正在家吃晚饭。在我们知道发生什么之前，房间开始晃动，父亲叫喊着让大家躲到厨房的桌子底下。我们都坐在桌子底下的地板上等着。当地面停止晃动时，我们站了起来，而且我们没有受伤。我们不能从房间里出去，因为门打不开了。我父亲用手机进行呼救，3小时后，有人来帮助我们。他们打开了门。我们起身离开了公寓。

A ten-year-old girl saved about one hundred other tourists in 2004 by warning them that a tsunami, a huge ocean wave, was on its way across the sea. She knew what was happening because she learnt about underwater earthquakes at school only a few weeks earlier, a newspaper reported.
在2004年，一个10岁的女孩通过提醒人们海啸——一种巨大的海浪——正从海面上涌来，挽救了大约一百名其他游客的性命。报纸报道说，因为仅在几周前她在学校学习了水下地震的知识，所以她知道正在发生什么事。
"I was on the beach and the water started to go funny," Tilly Smith told the reporter from the newspaper. "There were bubbles and the water went back suddenly. I knew there was going to be a tsunami. I told Mum," she said.
“我正在沙滩上，海水开始变得很不平常。”蒂莉史密斯告诉报社的记者。“有水泡并且海水突然退回去了。我知道将会有海啸，我告诉了我妈妈，”她说。
Tilly's mother and the hotel workers acted quickly. They cleared people from the beach just minutes before a huge wave reached the land. Luckily, no one died.

Tilly's teacher was very proud of her. "She's a very clever girl... It is very lucky that our class were learning about this kind of tsunami just two weeks before Christmas," he told the newspaper.
蒂莉的老师为地感到很自豪。“她是一个很聪明的女孩……很幸运我们班恰好在圣诞节前两周正在学习这种海啸的知识，”他告诉报社（人员）。
