EMPOWER project on methanol fuel cell powered CHP begins


(热电联产)欧洲项目于2020年2月初在芬兰埃斯波启动,通过燃料电池和氢联合事业(FCH JU)提供150万欧元(160万美元)的资金。丹麦公司Blue World Technologies是该项目的关键参与者,该项目致力于开发、制造和验证用于热电联产的改造甲醇燃料电池技术。


The European project ‘EMPOWER – European methanol powered fuel cell CHP’ (combined heat and power) kicked off in early February in Espoo, Finland, with funding of E1.5 million (US$1.6 million) through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU). Danish company Blue World Technologies is a key player in this project to develop, manufacture and validate reformed methanol fuel cell technology for CHP applications.


The EMPOWER project is being coordinated by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland [see also page 6], in collaboration with Blue World Technologies, catalyst specialist Catator AB in Sweden, automation system company THT Control Oy in Finland, and the Universidade do Porto (University of Porto) in Portugal. 


EMPOWER will develop, manufacture and validate a methanol fueled 5 kW CHP system based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) technology. The project will enhance the system efficiency in order to provide a cost-competitive, low-carbon, mini-CHP option for end-users in the industrial, construction and defence markets. The CHP unit will be capable of fast startup and rapid dynamic response, to help integration of intermittent power production from renewable energy sources. The system will be validated and demonstrated for six months at the site of an end-user. 


甲醇是一种液体燃料,可以使用现有的普通油箱系统进行经济有效的存储,并且很容易通过现有的公路油罐车和加油站的基础设施进行分配。可再生甲醇可以由各种广泛可用的原料制造,如来自:生物质、农业和木材废料、城市固体废物(MSW)的合成气,以及与可再生氢气结合的二氧化碳循环回收。利用当地原料生产的可再生甲醇进行补充,减少对进口化石燃料的依赖。


Methanol is a liquid fuel, which can be stored cost-effectively using existing non-pressurised tank systems, and is easily distributed through the existing infrastructure of road tanker trucks and refueling stations. Renewable methanol can be manufactured from a variety of widely available feedstocks such as synthesis gas (syngas) from biomass, agricultural and timber waste, municipal solid waste (MSW), and recycled CO2 combined with renewable hydrogen. Manufacturing renewable methanol from locally sourced feedstock will support sector coupling and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
