Research Overview |
Archaeological sites, as vital components of cultural heritage, embody the testimonies of the past and shape our cultural identity. Protecting and preserving these sites is crucial, particularly in today’s digital age where innovative methods, such as virtual reconstruction, offer new ways to document, visualize, and share heritage. However, virtual reconstructions often involve interpretations and hypotheses due to the fragmented state of archaeological remains, raising concerns about authenticity and the ability to distinguish evidence-based elements from speculative ones. This study explores methods to ensure the intellectual transparency and accuracy of virtual reconstructions while fostering an engaging user experience.
The research focuses on the ancient Roman Library of Pantainos, located in Athens’ Ancient Agora, as a case study. A virtually reconstructed 3D model of the site was developed using digital geometric documentation and historical research. To address authenticity, a revised graphic scale with specific color codes was introduced to indicate levels of historic-archaeological evidence, ensuring clarity in the reconstruction process. The model is presented through a Virtual Reality (VR) desktop application, enabling users to explore the site while understanding its levels of authenticity. The study highlights the importance of intellectual transparency and enhanced user experience, offering insights for future refinements in VR applications and contributing to the evolving field of digital heritage.
