DIM: A Diffusion Instability Measure

We developed and tested a diffusion instability measure (DIM) that is sensitive to factors affecting image quality, such as magnetic field monitoring, f0 stabilization, TE, gradient strengths, making it a promising tool for routine diffusion MRI quality assurance.


DIM values of FM datasets with various b-values are shown with 2nd&3rd order spherical harmonics reconstructions, calculated over diffusion directions 1-63 (plots 1&2) and 2-64 (plots 3&4). 

A magnification of the first 4 scatterplots is at the top left. 

The inset shows slice 30 (b=4000 s/mm²), where the 1st DWI (left) has artifacts, but the 22nd DWI (right) is artifact-free, effecting the value of DIM. 

Plots 5–10 show DIM values for Philips without FM and Cima.X with matched/minimum TR&TEs.



Correlation coefficient matrices:

  • Top two rows: Matrices calculated for diffusion directions 2 to 64, shown for increasing b-values with 2nd (first row) and 3rd (second row) spherical harmonics fits. 

  • 3rd and 4th rows: Same visualization for Philips and Siemens datasets without field monitoring.

  • 5th and 6th rows: Siemens dataset with minimal TR/TE. 

  • 7th row: For b-value 1000 with alternating on/off f0 stabilization. 

    Note: rows are windowed differently.
