About the position
We are currently recruiting for a PhD position in spatial interaction modelling for transport decarbonisation at the University of Leeds. This project is supervised by Professor Robin Lovelace and Dr. Malcolm Morgan. The position is fully funded for UK applicants and offers significant potential for high-impact research outcomes both nationally and internationally.
Title: EPSRC DLA: Spatial interaction modelling for future transport demand simulation
Supervisors: Professor Robin Lovelace and Dr. Malcolm Morgan
School: Institute for Transport Studies
Funding: Fully funded for UK applicants, including tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £19,237 per year for the academic session 2024/25) for 3.5 years.
Start Date: October 1, 2025
The UK government is committed to achieving a net-zero economy by 2050. Transport is currently the most polluting sector and has made the least progress in reducing emissions. This PhD project aims to develop a new generation of spatial interaction models to simulate future transport demand, modal shift, and technology adoption in a nationally scalable and integrated framework. The project will involve data engineering, model development, and implementation in open-source software to validate the models against real-world data.
Key Activities:
Data engineering using technologies such as Apache Arrow in R and Python.
Development of spatial interaction models based on the latest research.
Validation of models using open and ground-truth data.
Scenario construction for future transport demand based on plausible changes in technology, policy, and behavior.
Production of new datasets for future research.
Expected Impact:
This project will significantly enhance the evidence base for transport decarbonisation, enabling more effective policy and planning. The open-source models developed will be generalisable to other locations beyond the UK and Spain.
