Shenzhen's air quality ranked sixth out of 168 key Chinese cities in June, statistics from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment showed Monday. The top five cities were Haikou, Lhasa, Zhuhai, Huangshan and Zhoushan. The cities with the worst air quality in June were Xinxiang, Hebi, Yangquan, Linfen and Taiyuan. Photos by Liu Xudong Between January and June, Shenzhen also ranked sixth in air quality among the 168 cities and ranked first among the mega cities. Meanwhile, Linfen, Anyang, Xianyang, Hebi and Xinxiang ranked at the bottom with the worst air quality. The average of PM2.5 concentration, a key air pollution indicator, in 339 prefecture- and above-level cities in the first half of the year was 34 micrograms per cubic meter, down by 2.9 percent year on year. The PM10 concentration was 60 micrograms per cubic meter, up by 1.7 percent. Shenzhen’s air quality index has been listed in the top 10 among 168 key Chinese cities for seven consecutive years.Shenzhen’s air quality index has met the European Union standards. To improve the city’s air quality, Shenzhen has rolled out a series of measures such as Shenzhen Blue Sky Sustainable Development Action Plan, Blue Sky Project and Blue Sky Action Plan since 2004. It is also the first city in the country to control pollution from shipping, analyze PM2.5 origins and replace all fuel-powered public buses and taxis with electric ones. In 2020, the city’s average PM2.5 concentration was 19 micrograms per cubic meter and had only three hazy days, the lowest level in the city’s statistical history.
