DANISH soccer player Christian Eriksen’s collapse and medical emergency just prior to halftime during Denmark’s game against Finland in a Euro 2020 match Sunday reminded everyone of the important things in life, as millions of soccer fans across the world watched medical staff give him chest compressions and try to resuscitate him with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Luckily, Eriksen is now in a stable condition in a hospital, where he was taken after an excellent on-pitch response by the medical team.
According to the Shenzhen Center for Prehospital Care, Shenzhen has been equipped with more than 5,500 AEDs in public areas and has the highest AED coverage in China.
In the next five to 10 years, Shenzhen will reach the international standard of having 100 AEDs per 100,000 people, the center said.
One in four people — 330 million Chinese — suffers from cardiovascular disease in the country, as per the center.
For people with sudden cardiac arrest, the success rate of emergency treatment would decrease by 10 percent for every minute delayed. It is therefore important to conduct timely first aid within four minutes after cardiac arrest, which are called the “golden four minutes.”

If cardiopulmonary resuscitation is administered during the four minutes, the success rate of rescue is about 50 percent. Combined with an AED for defibrillation, the success rate can reach 90 percent.
According to the center, Shenzhen started installing AEDs in public areas in 2018, which cover the airport, Metro stations, universities, gymnasiums, boarding high schools, convention and exhibition centers, and community health centers. Since Jan. 28, AEDs have also been installed in 105 buses of Shenzhen Bus Group.
Questions arise like: How to use an AED? Is it difficult to use it? In response, the prehospital care center said that AEDs are provided for people with no medical background and that learning to use an AED is simple.

In order to let more people learn first-aid knowledge and how to use an AED, the center has held a number of first-aid training courses in recent years.
As of March this year, the center has trained 622,818 primary first-aid workers. The popularity rate of first-aid knowledge in the city is 3.1 percent, higher than the national average level.
The center also released an “AED map” that covers the whole city. In case of emergency, citizens can search the “AED导航” miniprogram on WeChat to find the nearest AED location.
