HKEX and Asset Management Association of China (AMAC) co-hosted a Mainland Private Equity Funds seminar in Shenzhen on 5 November 2020. More than 130 AMAC’s members and representatives from private equity funds gathered to learn more about the latest developments of the private equity and capital markets in Hong Kong.
HKEX Chief Executive Charles Li delivered a keynote speech with a look at Hong Kong’s unique role as a connecter between international and Mainland markets. Li said there are growing investment opportunities for Mainland private equity investment funds amid the homecoming listings of Chinese issuers and the rapid development of new economy companies in the Mainland. Hong Kong’s markets will become even more relevant and vibrant with strong liquidity brought by international and Mainland markets, Li added.
AMAC Vice Chairwoman Zhong Rong-Sa advised Mainland private equity funds to stay abreast with the latest developments of Hong Kong capital markets. As Hong Kong continues to attract more innovative enterprises to list in its markets, this provides ideal investment opportunities for Mainland private equity firms. Zhong added that the Mainland’s private equity funds have been developing rapidly thanks to growing financing needs, and they have now become important institutional investors in the Mainland and in Hong Kong.
Anson Law from the Market Development Division of Hong Kong Monetary Authority also joined the seminar to discuss the Limited Partnership Funds Ordinance (LPFO), which was implemented in Hong Kong in August. Law highlighted that more than 30 limited partnership funds have already registered in Hong Kong since the introduction of the ordinance, showing the development trend in the private funds industry as it moves away from the conventional offshore model. With promotion by the Hong Kong Government and strong support from the Mainland, Hong Kong will strengthen its role as a hub for venture capital and private equity funds in the Asia-Pacific region, Law added.
