Over 3,000 industry experts, investors and entrepreneurs in the biotech space gathered at the 7th annual China BioMed Innovation & Investment Conference (CBIIC) between 29 and 31 March, an event co-organised by HKEX. The latest cutting edge research and development, investment and financing trends and policy development surrounding the biotech and healthcare sectors were some of the biggest themes that were explored at this year’s conference.
HKEX Chief Executive Officer Nicolas Aguzin delivered welcome remarks at the opening ceremony, highlighting HKEX’s superconnector role in linking Mainland biotech opportunities with global capital. He noted that, since HKEX introduced new listing rules in 2018, Hong Kong has welcomed over 110 biotech and healthcare listings, collectively raising around HK$265 billion, accounting for a fifth of all biotech and healthcare IPO funds raised globally during the period. He said HKEX will continue to build on the extensive policy and community support for innotech in Hong Kong to attract even more diversity, meeting the evolving needs of issuers and investors.
HKEX Co-Chief Operating Officer and Head of Equities Wilfred Yiu shared during a panel discussion how HKEX’s listing rules have supported the funding needs of biotech and healthcare companies throughout their development cycle, adding that Hong Kong has built up a dynamic biotech market ecosystem that has attracted even more funding and talents into the space in recent years.
HKEX also participated in the "Pharmaceutical Digitalisation Sub-forum" and "Capital Market Innovation Service Sub-forum", where HKEX Head of China Issuer Services Winnie Han delved into the topics of smart healthcare and digitalisation in the medical field alongside experts who specialise in the use of artificial intelligence and innovative technologies. In the second forum, HKEX introduced its newly implemented listing rules for specialist technology companies and demonstrated how the new listing framework can support the growth story of innovative companies in China and around the world.
We would like to thank all participants for the engaging conversations in the last few days that will help shape the future of the biotech and healthcare ecosystem. The 8th China BioMed Innovation and Investment Conference will be held in September 2023 in Suzhou, and we hope to see you again!
