As the main sponsor in 2018, GF Automotive is again giving an enormous push to the Swiss researchers of Swissloop taking part in the Hyperloop Pod Competition in Los Angeles, a contest originally initiated by Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX.

Working on the “hyperloop concept” the American visionary and his team themselves plan to create a new transport system, which is supposed to carry people and goods in capsules at up to 1 200 km/h from one place to another. To boost the international competition and focus on the development coming with it have been the main reasons to establish this global challenge for universities by Mr. Musk. Under the name Swissloop the ETH Zurich, a highly specialized team working very hard to make the vision come true, was taking part in the contest 2017. Already then having been sponsored by GF it took the impressive third place.

GF Automotive therefore has renewed its support to the ETH team as the main sponsor for 2018. Dominik Mahnig, Head of Product Management & Development at GF Automotive, explains how GF is supporting the joint project: “In close cooperation with the Swissloop team, we developed an aluminum axle carrier in lightweight design. The optimized geometry and bionic design enabled us to minimize the weight of the cast component.” To make the pod as light – and therefore as competitive – as possible, GF got even more involved in development, Mr. Mahnig proudly illustrates even further.
