The belt bag has reigned supreme as the undisputed style of the season. First spotted on editors in Milan and Paris, it’s a trend that bubbled under at the menswear shows last June, only to gain even more traction in 2018. The key is how it’s worn: the 1990s round-the-waist look is acceptable if worn on the side of your hip, but most prefer slung over one shoulder, bike-courier style.

Balenciaga is leading the charge of cult accessories this season, from the blink-and-you’ll-miss-them Triple S stacked trainers to the equally coveted Speed sock trainers. Its Bazar bags, inspired by Thai street markets, are reimagined in greens, creams and greys as well as black, navy and red this season. Pair with a classic bomber and modern denim for on-the-go style.

Menswear trends can be very subtle. Take the mini messenger – which has had a quite reprieve thanks to the revival of another 1990s favourite, the belt bag (see above). Prada’s signature nylon version has led the cause, while luxed-up versions from Bottega Veneta and Gucci make a case for a compact carry-all. Belstaff’s muted shirt and Acne Studios’ easy cotton trousers complete the laid-back look.

The leather backpack helped propel the once gym-only accessory to new levels of style, but some labels have done a U-turn, with the nylon backpack fast becoming the next big thing. Givenchy and Valentino have led the way with their signature prints on smart, functional styles: team with Martine Rose’s sweatshirt and simple chinos for a smart take on sports luxe.
