Since the beginning of this year, concerts and music festivals have been growing in popularity, along with significantly more new business forms and new spaces of performances and a gradually increasing proportion of tourism performances in the market. The performance market has been booming, injecting new vitality into the consumer market. According to China Association of Performing Arts, there were 1,137 large concerts and music festivals during the first three quarters of 2023, attracting 11.45 million audience members. More than 60% of the audience came from another city on average. With a significant year-on-year increase in both the number of performances and the box office revenue, small theaters and new spaces were particularly active and have attracted a large audience. Since the Spring Festival this year, tourism performances have been increasingly popular due to the strong demand for travel. In some popular tourist destinations, popular programs had a full house even after extra rounds were added.
During the 2023 CIFTIS, new spaces for performing arts, which usually open in business districts, cultural industry parks and cultural blocks, were shown in a high profile with special decoration and stage design, allowing exhibition visitors to enjoy wonderful dramas and performances onsite.
During the 2023 Fair, Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center presented The Cat God in the Forbidden City, an immersive performance, while Mahua FunAge performed The Hustle Dinner, Dance2023 Club and other dramas in the "immersive performance & reception hall". Immersive performance scenes and dramas were reproduced in the exhibition, catching the attention of a large audience. Laughing, dancing and having fun while watching, the audience in the new space for performing arts were both spectators and participants of the show.

The performance in the new space brought the actors and the audience closer and made the audience a part of the play, said Liu Yinuo, a young actress who played Li Na in Dance Club. This interactive feature can make every performance new. It has also put higher requirements for acting skills and reaction capability.
Liu Yuanyuan, regional general manager and producer of Mahua FunAge Performance Center, said that the traditional theater is a relatively closed space, while the exhibition is a dynamic one. Therefore, it poses a challenge to the layout of scenes and the performance of actors to attract the audience and let them integrate into the play in such a bustling and crowded environment. The greatest highlight of performances in the new space lies in their spontaneous and unpredictable nature, which resonates with the younger audience who seek a sense of novelty when watching performances.
