Dear Parents and Guardians of Lakeside Middle School Students,

I hope you are enjoying these sunny days by connecting with family and friends, playing outside, andreading good books – or whatever way feels right to you! I am looking forwardto the start of school with tremendous anticipation. This is a great school, and we are glad you and your student are part of it.

This summer I have been thinking a lot about how young people undergo a fantastic transformation between ages 10 and 14. They go from being dependent on their close family circle to looking out toward the greater world. It's a period of intense development around identity and sense of place in community. Who am I? What doI believe? How do I learn? How does my race, ethnicity, and gender impact myinteractions with others? What is a good friend? How do I take responsibility for my actions? What do I think about the events happening in my school? In Seattle? In the world? At Lakeside, we create opportunities for students to explore these questions in developmentally appropriate ways. It happens inclasses, advisor groups, Community Meetings, affinity groups, outdoor trips, service learning, sports teams, GSL trips, and in clubs. Attending to the identity development of these amazing young people is the core work of Middle School teachers, and we are glad to be in partnership with all of you parents and guardians.

I have also been thinking about the impact technology has on our world and on young people. Iwill speak and write more about this as the year goes on, but for now, I askall of you to consider this with regard to the devices themselves: Our young people need us, the adults in their lives who care about them, to model thekind of technology use we hope to see in them. More specifically, if we want our young people to spend time away from their phones, tablets, and computers, they must seeus doing it too. They must learn from us that it is important to make time todisconnect, especially when we are physically present with people about whom we care.

What can you do?

Consider holding off ongetting a phone for your student for as long as you feel comfortable (different families have different thresholds). They will tell you that everyone else hasa phone; it's not true, even in 8th grade.

Consider putting all thephones away during meals; they should be far away from the table, even in theother room. Modeling from parents and guardians here is key.

Consider keeping phonesout of the bedroom for your students, at all times or after a certain hour inthe evening. This way, you create a dedicated space where they can be free from the constant buzz of social media.

Always remember that thephone, and the internet access, belong to you.

In the Middle School, phones should be off and put away during school hours. I want to be clear:Phones and technology are not bad, but learning to use them with intention is,in 2017, a skill that must be modelled, taught, and reinforced.

Additionally, he oversees the student support team,grade-level activities, service learning, academic probation, and studentreviews.

There are many resources available to students and families at Lakeside Middle School. Let me begin withyour student's advisor. Each Middle School student belongs to a group led by anadvisor, who is a faculty or staff member who maintains an overall view of yourstudent's life at school. The advisor is the main liaison between Lakeside andyou. Your student's advisor can talk with you about your student's academic performance, social interactions, and/or emotional adjustment. The advisorshould be the first person you contact when you have a question or concern.Students will receive a call from their advisors the week before the schoolyear starts. I encourage you to make a meaningful connection with yourstudent's advisor in September or October – meet, call, or connect through email.Share with your student's advisor what you perceive to be your student'sstrengths and areas for growth. Parents/guardians and advisors work as an adultteam to help students navigate the challenges of school that inevitably arise, especially for kids between the ages of 10 and 14. All parents and guardianswill have conferences with advisors the week of Nov. 6-10.
