A good resume is everything you need to make the next move in your career and job search. Usually, an expertly reworked, revamped and well-revised resume that uses the right language and wording based on your unique job industry is all that most hiring managers requires to bring a candidate to the table. Though it is incredibly easy to make mistakes while writing your resume, with the right information, you can create an ideal resume. Importantly, if you want your resume to stand out, you need to look at more resumes before preparing one. However, at times resume formatting can be confusing especially when you are writing your first resume but you need not to worry too much since this information will equip you with the necessary skills and information on how an ideal resume should look like.

What is the ideal resume?
For a resume to be considered as ideal, first it must be legible. A good resume should be easy to read by humans, or by companies that use a resume screening service. Choose fonts that are most appropriate to your industry and ensure their consistency in your resume. There are numerous fonts that you can choose while writing a resume but the most appropriate ones include the traditional serif fonts (Times New Roman) and sans serif fonts.
Resume format is another thing that makes a resume ideal. Though there are numerous resume formats that you can choose from, the format you choose should be based on what you really want an employee to know about you. For instance: chronological format should be employed when you have been consistent in your career. The chronological format should not be used when you have been inconsistent (have gaps or shifted industries) in your career. If you have shifted industries, then you may opt to go for the functional format to avoid revealing your weak points to the hiring team. The functional format makes the resume ideal by focusing on what you can do, your achievements and your core competence. This format is mostly used to make ideal resumes for individuals who are looking to change industries or have employment gaps that don’t add any value to their experience.
In continuation, an ideal resume should include contact information on every page in order to make it easy for the employer to communicate in case you are considered for the position you have applied for. It should also include exact dates for every employment and education. This ensures that the resume is not ignored by the hiring team for lacking dates or having dates that are not consistent and correct. Ensuring the layout is pleasing is another thing that makes the resume neat and attractive to the eye. See to it that your resume is pleasing to the eyes and minimal distractive by including enough white spaces in between your text and bullet points to highlight your skills.
Last but not certainly the least, the resume needs to be grammatically correct so that the employer does not dismiss the resume for containing typos. According to resume writing rules, an ideal resume should contain a list of core skills since they allow the reader to scan easily the top portion of the resume and get a good sense of your capabilities. Moreover, listing your core skills also aids the resume to get past the application tracking systems.
In conclusion, besides bearing in mind all of the above, an ideal resume should split each and every role into responsibilities and achievements. There should be a short description under each job title explaining the candidates’ responsibilities in a particular role. However, under the description, the resume should highlight the most noteworthy and relevant contributions in a clear manner. Lastly, the biggest part of an ideal resume should address your recent roles and achievements that are directly tied to your current job details and also keep in mind that the education section should appear towards the bottom of your resume.
