In today’s job market, and especially in China, most open positions at mid-sized firms and MNCs get hundreds of applications from qualified, capable university graduates everyday. When competition is that tough, you need to figure out what sets you apart from the rest of the candidate pool at the beginning of your job hunt. Here are our top tips on how you can increase your chances on landing that dream job.

Network.

Use your current professional and personal network to meet and engage with potential employers.A large portion of successful hires are candidates that have been referred to the company, or have had some sort of previous connection to an employee at the firm. Attend networking events or even branch out and check out social events you wouldn’t normally go to- you never know who might be able to help you get your foot in the door!

Make sure your resume is complete, easy to read and gives a good overview of who you are.

Do NOT just list your employment and education history. Most applicants will have a university education and at least 1 or 2 internships under their belt. Make sure you demonstrate under each position you held how you brought value to the firm and what made you worth hiring. Your resume is the first point of contact between you and the hiring team, so messy, uninformative CVs won’t even get a second glance!

Highlight your soft skills.

Soft skills are interpersonal character traits which enhance a person’s ability to communicate and interact with other people effectively. I have been told over and over again that a candidate was not a right fit due to their lack of soft skills and social etiquette. For client or customer facing jobs such as business development, marketing, hospitality and customer service representatives, soft skills are more highly regarded than employment and education history. If you have the right personal skill set for the job, show your potential employer show you stand out from other candidates! It would also help to include a short but informative “About Me” paragraph highlighting your best qualities and how you would fit into their company culture and job requirements.

Do your background research, be polite.

Before entering an interview, make sure you know as much as you can about the hiring firm. Company history, culture, previous clients and notable achievements are all things you could mention in your interview. Scanning your interviewer’s LinkedIn profile to understand their background and to see what you might have in common is also helpful. If you manage to make a personal or professional connection with your interviewer, it will definitely make you more memorable once interview rounds are over. A post interview thank you email or letter will also demonstrate your professionalism and appreciation of their time.
