DIGITAL MAGAZINE BEIJING BLEND CELEBRATES FIRST BIRTHDAY!

One year of provocative social commentary and sharp cross-cultural insight – that’s what media group Beijing Blend will be inviting Beijingers to celebrate during their Anniversary Party this August 14th.

First launched in 2014 as a Wechat magazine releasing weekly bilingual feature articles, Beijing Blend has since grown to include creativity-themed discussion panels and a video series about trending news in the Chinese blogosphere.Across these platforms Beijing Blend has covered a range of topics – from sustainable living in Beijing to the growth of the LGBT community to the recent ‘Uniquickie’ sex-tape controversy.

“Beyond bringing readers and viewers the city’s hottest culture and conversation, we’re essentially about building community – whether that be via Wechat, online orin-person,” says co-founder Katrina Yu. “Beijing is full of fascinating people pursuing and discussing interesting projects and ideas – we bring those discussions to light and connect like-minded people.”

On Friday August 14 Beijing Blend invites the public to party with them at the Bookwormin Sanlitun, providing canapés and drinks, as well as live music by Australian vocalist Tash Jamieson from the Groove Collective and pop DJ extraordinaire, DJ Panda Chief.

Continuing the Beijing Blend conversation ethos, the evening will also explore the theme‘ Left Behind, Not Forgotten,’ through a photography exhibition of documentary-style portraits of migrant children. All ticket proceeds from the event will go to Education in Sight (EIS). EIS co-founder Andrew Shirman says “the theme is close to the heart of Education In Sight, as we work to deliverey eglasses to students in rural communities who are often affected by displaced parents. We’re grateful to be involved with the organising team of socially-focused artists and creatives to bring attention to this cause.”Photography prints will be available for purchase via silent auction, with sale proceeds going towards EIS and Shang Xue Lu Shang, another non-profit working to care for migrant children in rural areas.

The Bookworm is proud to be a headline sponsor for the event. “Beijing Blend presents funny, interesting, topical news to an international audience without snark or judgment,” says Bookworm Literary Festival Coordinator Anthony Tao. “At its best, it’s a window into Chinese culture without any of the clichés, presented by young bilingual and bicultural journalists who are the exact sort of people you’d want to sit and talk with.”

The Bookworm is Beijing Blend’s new studio home, providing the setting for its new video series, which will be launched during the celebration.
