Event: The Hutong: Tianamen and the Making of Modern Beijing – A Walking Seminar at Tianamen Square
For much of China’s 20th century, the area around Tiananmen has been the political epicenter of the Chinese nation. Certainly, it represents the beating heart of the city of Beijing. This walking seminar will take us through Beijing’s history as an imperial capital and how the abdication of the last dynasty in 1912 and the founding of the PRC in 1949 fundamentally transformed this city. Along the way, we will stroll through the Legation Quarter (the setting for Paul French’s excellent book Midnight in Peking), visit the Beijing Urban Planning Hall, walk through Tiananmen Square, and explore the historic hutongs of Qianmen and Dashilar.
This walk will travel from the Chongwenmen Subway Stop to the Hepingmen Subway Stop, a distance of about 4 km. We will be taking it slowly, with plenty of rests, but guests are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
Join historian and blogger Jeremiah Jenne (“Jottings from the Granite Studio”) for a fun and informative walking seminar of modern Chinese history. Not your usual history tour, Jeremiah employs voices, modern history fun facts, stories, pop culture references, and examples from the archives to bring to life China’s rich history.
