Awfully Chocolate is every chocoholics dream come to life. Originally started in Singapore, this coffee shop serves the goods of my chocolate soaked dreams, from white chocolate crème brulee, to heaving jars of creamy tiramisu.



In order to fully achieve the Awfully Chocolate experience, our dining party arrived on empty stomachs, ready to have their dessert for dinner.


The tiramisu (88 RMB) comes served in a giant mason-esque jar, and is easily big enough for 4 people or 1 very greedy person. Chocolate is definitely the main feature of this tiramisu, and it was fluffy, light and gone in about 2 minutes. The white chocolate crème brulee (37 RMB) had a glossy lid of burned sugar, hiding an interior of sweet, slippery crème brulee.



Now, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Between the 7 of us, we also ordered a Cold Poached Chocolate covered with Butterscotch (33 RMB), a Mille Crepe cake (37 RMB), profiteroles (73 RMB), 1 lone peanut butter truffle (11 RMB), and 2 waffles – Black Forest (68 RMB) and Red Velvet Berries (68 RMB).




The cold poached chocolate was the least favourite dish of the night. The texture was unfavourably compared to faecal matter by some of my more crass dining companions. Personally, I liked the texture of it- imagine a firmer chocolate mousse, but it definitely paled in comparison to the other heavyweight contenders on the table. The Mille Crepe cake, although very impressive to look at, was too spongy and was filled with thin layers of what tasted like whipped cream.




The profiteroles arrived, lined up like prisoners waiting for their execution. A saucer of melted chocolate was lavished over the top, melting and immediately forming a hard shell. The profiteroles were delicious and sandwiched with chocolate ice cream. This was fine for everyone else, but I have the sensitive gums of an old person and therefore struggled a bit. The lone peanut butter was small but intensely chocolatey, with a serious aftertaste of peanut butter. Good, but wouldn’t order again.




The black forest waffle was basically the Godfather of waffles. Towers of chocolate shavings, ice cream and cherries topped a fluffy chocolate waffle, which was still gooey when we cut into it. Yum. The other waffle was good, but paled in comparison to the black forest one.



Arguably the main highlight of the meal was the Salted Butterscotch Brownie, a hefty brick of dense, squidgy brownie layered with buttery brown salty butterscotch. The piece de resistance is the thick golden layer of butterscotch on top of the brownie, which complements the darker chocolate in the brownie. The brownie is a generous portion, but again can be eaten by 1 glutton, aka me. (I went back on a separate occasion and ate the whole brownie by myself and felt quite sick after.)




In short, Awfully Chocolate is worth a visit for anyone with even half a sweet tooth.
