Set along Sanlitun Xijie, Tigermama is a local, well-priced Macanese restaurant. Macanese food is a mixture of Portuguese and Southern Chinese food. Having never had it before, I was excited for this meal.



The décor is simple, and matches the casual, laid back feel of Tigermama – imagine a sort of riff on the standard hole-in-the wall noodle joint. The inside of the restaurant is, surprisingly, for any restaurant (and especially one in Beijing), a shocking, vibrant green. The interior of the restaurant is littered with leafy green plants, and the little porch of Tigermama has porches made out of bird cages, and a calming water feature.



After we figured out how to open the door, we were greeted and shown to our seats. The menu has 7 dishes to choose from, and for each dish you can choose what type of noodle, sauce or meat you want – ideal for picky eaters and very flexible. The waitress came over and we ordered our drinks (They have vitasoy!) and food although when ordering our drinks we were shown to a drinks cabinet where you pick out and serve your drink yourself- with the waitress opening a bottle for you if necessary. Both my companion and I found this strange but during the course of the meal we decided we both liked the casual style of dining as it created a nice, chilled out atmosphere.



We ordered the Signature tiger vermicelli in soup, with a choice of regular noodles and curry chicken (28 RMB), the dry egg noodle with soya bean sauce (18 RMB) and the green vegetables with a soya bean sauce (12 RMB). All three dishes came quickly.



The soup dish was really flavoursome. The broth had hints of garlic and spring onion, and when the curry chicken was added was really delicious. The noodles and chicken were cooked perfectly, the noodles chewy with a nice bite and the chicken soft and flavourful. The noodles were the perfect size for one person, but definitely not for sharing.



The next dish we had was the dry egg noodles that were tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. On each table were little pots of various sauces which was good because we didn’t have to ask for them (would have been difficult with the language barrier). Once we had added chilli and soy sauce to the noodles, they were much more palatable but again still just an average bowl of noodles.


The green vegetables came soaked in soy sauce and were nicely flavoured. The portion size was enough for two people to share and were nice as a side to our carb-based mains. Overall, the food was really good and well-priced so it is well worth a visit between friends or family- I’m not sure the casual approach would be best suited for a date though!
