Mikey Chee is the founder of Fresh Prints, a WeChat photo printing company that simply prints your memories.
Hi Mikey! Please could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you ended up in Beijing?
I’m an ABC from New Jersey and relocated to Beijing 2 years ago for work. I’m 25, entrepreneurial spirit, BJ lacrosse promoter and a foodie.
Tell us the inspiration behind Fresh Prints and what it is.
Went to Jiuzhaigou with the girlfriend and took a bunch of beautiful photos. When we returned from our trip, I wanted to print some photos out. After visiting some print shops, I was upset with the customer experience. I decided to try something out for my friends by printing some photos for a birthday party. After the feedback, I decided to go for it.
Fresh Prints is a WeChat photo printing company that simply prints your memories. Connect with our Wechat account, send photos using the full size image option, pay with wechat and have your photos delivered to your house within 3 days.
How did your previous working experiences inform how you conduct Fresh Prints?
I have a very mixed background of working experience. Sales, Customer Experience, Data and analytics, etc. Along with my work experience, I’ve made a lot of friends through work and outside of the office. It’s important to gather new resources along your career so you can always explore new options.
We’ve noticed you’ve placed huge importance on WeChat to connect with your customers – why is that?
WeChat ecosystem is converting the boring e-commerce webpage where you click and buy, to an actual conversational experience. You know how in China the store retail representative just follows you around? That’s creepy and annoying! They don’t even talk to you, just follow you around. The entire customer experience is unpleasant in China. With WeChat and it’s 700 million MAU, it’s a chance to offer a scalable service without intruding on personal space.

Do you have any words of wisdom for budding entrepreneurs in China?
Sales will trump everything. Got a product? Test it out at markets. Got a SaaS product or app? Gain attention through a signup page.

Being an entrepreneur isn’t about owning your own venture and it sure as hell isn’t easy. Be prepared to skip on fancy dinners with friends and nights out at the pub. Every waking moment should be about growing your business. If it isn’t, you’re wasting your time.
Tell us a few of your favourite things to do in Beijing.
I only care about Fresh Prints now, but before that I loved eating out and trying new restaurants. I’m a huge foodie. My favorite spot in Beijing is Jingshan park. I really like to watch the sunset over the forbidden city and soak in the entire city.
