The Hainan Provincial Government is expected to announce measures allowing delivery services for duty-free shops, in a bid to relieve pressure on Hainan’s pick-up points, media reports have revealed.
According to a report by the 21st Century Business Herald, the policy is expected imminently, as the new duty-free allowances and the ensuing sales bonanza has put additional pressure on airport pick-up points, as well as making shoppers’ experience more difficult.
Under current rules, passengers who have purchased duty-free goods must present a valid ID, boarding pass, pick-up voucher on the day of arriving at the pick-up office of the airport, port or train station. The booming duty-free business has meant longer queues at the Haikou Meilan Airport, media has said.
The report notes that the new policy drafted by the provincial government will allow companies to deliver duty-free goods directly to customers’ homes.
One sticky point appears to be verifying that the goods purchased are intended for shoppers’ own use, as opposed to re-selling.
Nonetheless, the move is expected to further supercharge the already burgeoning duty-free industry on the outlying islands.
