2023 was a record year for non-SoftBank Japanese investment in Europe

2023 was a record year for Japanese investment in Europe. Excluding Softbank-investments, Japanese capital was involved in a record 97 funding rounds in 2023. Most of these investments came from Japanese corporates or their venture arms - for example, SBI Investment, the VC arm of SBI Holdings, lead Oxford Quantum Circuits' $100m round in November 2023. In Japan there is an increasing demand for technologies in which Europe excels, particularly green tech and deeptech. This is reflected in Japanese corporates' investments - examples include Mitsubishi Corporation's investment in hydrogen-startup Hystar, Marubeni's investment in spacetech startup D-Orbit and Onomichi Dockyard's investment in nuclear startup Core Power. Japanese corporates are also investing in European funds such as Tokyo Gas's investment in Octopus Energy's offshore wind fund.

Humanoid robotics firm 1X raises €91.1M to market its second-generation Android

Oslo-based AI and robotics company 1X Technologies (previously known as Halodi Robotics) announced it has secured $100m in Series B funding round. This investment follows the company's $23.5m Series A round from March 2023 which saw the participation of OpenAI as an investor. Founded in 2014, 1X has been working for nearly a decade on designing androids that collaborate with humans. 1X's first robot EVE is a wheeled android for logistics, retail, and security. While 1X will continue supporting enterprise clients, the company has also been working on developing NEO, a bipedal humanoid robot capable of human-like movements and behaviours. 1X will use the latest funds to further develop and launch NEO for home assistance and consumer tasks, handling chores, and offering support to those with mobility challenges.

UK startup ecosystems on the rise outside London

UK's startup ecosystem is ranked 1st in Europe and 3rd globally. Historically, most of this VC investment has gone into London-based startups, but lately VC funding in the UK is becoming increasingly decentralised in favour of emerging hubs such as Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, etc. According to Dealroom, London's share of VC investment dropped from 75% in 2019 to 65.5% in 2023, while investment is growing fastest in the West Midlands, Glasgow and Northern Ireland. Cities like Birmingham have seen a 1183% increase in VC investment over 2019-2023 thanks to fundings such as robotics startup Conigital's £500m Series A+. Similarly, Glasgow has seen a 526% growth in VC over 2019-2023 mostly into Healthtech and Life Sciences startups such as Chemify. The latest numbers show how innovation is increasingly happening outside of well-established tech centres like London.

Miniature neurostimulator developer Nalu Medical raises $65M

The California-based Nalu Medical raised $65 million in series E round led by Novo Holdings, to boost the reach and adoption of its miniaturized neurostimulation implant aimed at treating chronic pain. Nalu's FDA-cleared approach includes a small, battery-free pulse generator placed under the skin through a 15 mm incision and connected to the spinal cord or peripheral nerves with a thin electrical lead. Power is supplied wirelessly with an externally worn rechargeable disc, while therapy is controlled by a smartphone app. The company says its implant can last for 18 years, while the external discs can be swapped out and upgraded over time. A temporary version of the hardware can be used for up to 30 days, to gauge how a user responds to neurostimulation before switching to a long-term device. A post-market study conducted by Nalu last November showed that 86% of users saw their lower back and leg pain cut down by at least half after three months of treatment.

Autonomous farm robot developer Burro raised $24M

The Philly-based Burro raised $24 million series B round led by Catalyst Investors and Translink Capital with previous investors including Toyota Ventures and F-Prime Capital also contributing. Burro robots work alongside humans at nurseries, vineyards, and farms, helping to move produce and plants. The 44-person company is launching its new product, Burro Grande, the autonomous vehicle that can carry 1,500 pounds. According to the company, the team's vision for augmenting, not replacing, labor with machines that work safely and reliably outdoors alongside humans, exponentially increasing efficiency and production. Burro's ROI demonstrated for farms and nurseries, perfectly positioning them to become the dominant outdoor robotics company. Burro currently has about 300 Burro robots operating and hopes to have around 800 in operation by the end of the year, with more sales through dealers and global sales.

Neocis raises $20M in mission to revolutionize dental surgery through robotics

Miami-based Neocis, in robot-assisted dental implant surgery raised $20 million in additional financing from NVentures, NVIDIA's venture capital arm, and Mirae Asset Venture Investment, which invests in growth-stage healthcare and technology businesses. To date, the company has raised about $180 million from investors. Neocis created and sells Yomi, dentistry's first and only robotic surgical system cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The Yomi platform allows dentists to precisely pre-plan the dental implant procedure and then guides their hand during the surgery according to the pre-operative plan. Because of the increased accuracy and digital planning, dentists can operate with a smaller incision. For patients, that means less pain and faster recoveries. To date, Neocis' Yomi has assisted in 40,000 implants. The company says a dental implant is placed with Yomi approximately every six minutes in the U.S.
