Truck Toll in the Netherlands starting July 1, 2026

On July 1, 2026, the truck toll will be introduced in the Netherlands. This means that owners of trucks weighing 3.5 tons or more will have to pay a fee per kilometre driven. The toll applies to all highways and several important provincial and municipal roads. At the same time, the Eurovignette will be discontinued in the Netherlands, and the motor vehicle tax for trucks will be reduced.

The toll rate is calculated based on the truck’s weight and CO₂ emissions. The lighter and cleaner the vehicle, the lower the toll. The average rate is around €0.186 per kilometre (2025 price level). For electric and zero-emission trucks, the rate may be lower. With this measure, the government aims to promote sustainable freight transport and reduce CO₂ emissions.

The toll applies to both Dutch and foreign trucks of types N2 and N3. There are some exceptions, for example, for older vehicles or specific types such as emergency services. Trucks must use an On-Board Unit (OBU) to record the kilometres driven. Owners will enter into a contract with a provider who supplies the OBU, registers the kilometres, and handles billing.

Part of the revenue from the truck toll will be reinvested in the transport sector. This could include subsidies for zero-emission trucks, charging stations, or collaborative projects in the logistics chain. In this way, the government aims to support companies in the transition to more sustainable transport.
