We spoke with Unil about their focus on improving logistics, controlling costs, and reducing environmental impact.
Global imports and full transport control
Nina Stokke, Freight and Forwarding Manager at Unil, outlines their approach:
“We import goods from all over the world. It's crucial for us to ‘own’ all transport operations and negotiate freight agreements directly. This ensures optimal terms, not just in pricing, but also in sustainability, HR standards, transit times, problem-solving capabilities, and customer service. We need full visibility into how our goods are transported and when they are delivered.”
In collaboration with ColliCare, Unil has restructured freight terms with several suppliers, gaining significantly better control over the transport segment. Long-term agreements with transportation providers are key to building strong relationships and mutual understanding. After years of working with ColliCare, Unil reports excellent support across the entire supply chain.
Environmental Focus and Secure Transport
Unil reports all environmental data to NorgesGruppen, which has set a goal to become climate-neutral by 2030. Comprehensive CO₂ accounting is required to measure the environmental impact of transportation, with annual reporting and follow-up on reductions. The reporting standards are rigorous, covering all aspects of transportation, even down to the carbon footprint of each consumer unit.
All Unil suppliers must actively engage in environmental initiatives, and transport providers undergo thorough audits every three years.
Marthe Opland, Quality Manager at Unil, explains:
“Our warehouse is ISO 14001-certified, and we work systematically with environmental management and continuous improvement. Transport is one of our key environmental aspects, and we actively choose the most sustainable solutions. This includes prioritising carriers with lower emissions and optimising logistics to reduce environmental impact. All relevant data is tracked in our environmental accounts, which are vital tools in our efforts to reduce our overall climate footprint.”
Milestones in the Partnership
A major success in the Unil–ColliCare partnership has been the shift from road to rail and sea freight, aligning with Unil’s strategy to cut emissions. Where road transport remains the best option, ColliCare offers vehicles powered by more sustainable fuels such as biodiesel or biogas. When possible, modular trucks are being used to increase capacity per vehicle. This close collaboration has yielded strong results.
Unil exclusively uses carriers equipped with the latest low-emission engines.
Reliable service in critical situations
Unil's top priority is keeping store shelves stocked and essential products available to customers. If an item is missing, customers may turn to competitors, making consistent deliveries crucial. Lost sales must be avoided at all costs.
Jarle Hagen, Logistics Manager at Unil, shares:
“Unexpected events happen, regardless of the carrier. We need fast, ad hoc solutions. If a landslide blocks a rail line, we rely on a service-minded transport partner with backup plans.
