Mexico's Senate approved new tariffs for various types of products imported from many Asian countries, including China, which will start from January 1, 2026, aims to strengthen the protection of the local industry noted by Bloomberg.

The new tariffs will range from 5% to 50%, including products such as textiles, metals and auto parts. Chinese automotive industry may be affected significantly, since vehicles will probably face tariff of 50%. This sector used to take a small share, but became to represent 20% of the Mexican market in the past six years.

The coverage of new tariffs was gradually comprehensive, meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance estimates that the tariffs will raise about US$2,800 million in 2026, highly affect imports from China, India and South Korea. 

Moreover, trades between Asia and Mexico will be impacted, as we mentioned in previous articles, capacity was adjusted globally from the middle of December to the beginning of January next year, in order to adapt oversupply and low demand difficulties; while global economic growth is expected to soften in 2026, therefore, these factors will together further decrease demand on related routes, the growth of trade between Asia and Mexico may slow down as well, add uncertainties to the mix trend of rates in not only certain regions, but also the world.

Besides, about Mexican market, some analysts noted that increase consumer goods prices impacted by tariffs on origin materials may decrease market competitiveness, while companies in Asian countries may turn to other Latin America countries to invest due to the increasing cost and changeable rules of tariffs, therefore change part of the pattern of global trade.

此外，关于墨西哥市场，一些分析师指出，受原产地材料关税影响的消费品价格上涨可能降低市场竞争力，而亚洲国家的公司可能因关税成本上升和多变规则而转向其他拉丁美洲国家投资，从而改变全球贸易格局的一部分。
