According to Seatrade Maritime News:
One of Maersk’s ships with 6,500 TEU transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea from December 18th to 19th. Maersk said that this ship was provided with the highest possible safety measures during the transit, which was the first time for two years.
The ship is working on MECL service which links India, the Middle East and the US East Coast, transiting through the Cape of Good Hope. Meanwhile, the important action of transiting via the Red Sea does not mean they are rerouting and moving their east-west network to the Red Sea region, according to Maersk.
As we mentioned in previous articles, excess capacity released from routes via the Red Sea region was almost absorbed by outlying routes of the global network, therefore, shipping lines are not in a rush to resume transiting in the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. According to Maersk, they are considering returning step by step if the security conditions are satisfying, the initial transit will be followed by a limited number of trans-Suez sailings.
Moreover, from January 2026, CMA CGM’s INDAMEX service will return to transiting the Suez Canal on both the fronthaul and backhaul voyages, which will shorten two weeks from its current full rotation time. In a word, most shipping lines started to transit via Suez and the Red Sea gradually from late time this year to early time in 2026, since transit times will be much shorter than via the Cape of Good Hope, however, they may not resume with a large amount of cargo in the near future considering capacity and safety situation currently.
