According to Air Cargo News:
On December 12th, European Union (EU) member states approved a new tariff of a €3 customs duty per item on e-commerce parcels valued below €150 from July 1st, 2026. This will affect many countries, especially China, which took the share of 91% of all small parcels imported to EU in 2024. Meanwhile, the UK is planning to cancel the exemption for e-commerce parcels as well, though the specific time is still uncertain.
However, this new tariff is expected to be a temporary measure, which will be changed to other more long-lasting tariffs policy. The tariff was set to deal with the surge of imported e-commerce goods, and protect local businesses. Since volumes decreased on the Transpacific route after the US implemented a similar measure earlier this year, the situation may be the same next year between Asia and Europe.
While being separate to the EU handling fee which is under negotiation at present, the new tariff will decrease the competitiveness of e-commerce operators, raise the cost of trade and may cause the decline of demand. The higher prices of e-commerce goods due to the new tariffs will lose a significant advantage in the market, therefore, perhaps it will be more crucial for suppliers and logistics services to be more professional and trustful, in order to provide a more pleased shopping and transporting experience to customers.
