英文讲稿

I've been working on the decor of my new home recently. And one day, I asked my dad: "Can we buy furniture online?" Without any hesitation, he replied “no”. But I didn't believe that, so I decided to do some research on my own. Based on what I've found, buying furniture online, well, as with everything else in life, is not all black and white. There are both advantages and disadvantages to it. And that's what we are gonna talk about today.

Starting with advantages. First, buying furniture online is really convenient. If you shop for furniture at a physical store, it could easily cost you a whole day. Some people, especially those who have a full-time job, just don't have that luxury of time. In some cases, people end up buying furniture that they don't really like because they're sick and tired of visiting one store after another. All they want is just to get the whole thing over with. But you don't have that problem if you shop online since you can access the website wherever and whenever you want.

Second, the Internet offers a greater variety of products, which makes comparison shopping easier. Actually there are many original brands online that are really worth checking. They are still small brands and therefore don't have the money to open offline stores. But their design is really great. Before, I really thought that there were generally two types of furniture, the affordable type, like those from IKEA, and the more expensive type, like those sold in Red Star Macalline, which is a Chinese furniture retailer. So I am really surprised and hugely inspired by those online brands with their unique design and all the different styles.

But there are also downsides to buying furniture online. First, you don't always get what you see. It's kinda hard to visualize how a piece of furniture will actually turn up in your house by just looking at a few pictures online. And in most cases, it's not just that piece of furniture in the picture. There are usually other items to go with it to create this complete look that you are actually into. And the photos could have also been retouched. Honestly, anything can be made to look good this way. But in real life, that piece of furniture may look not even close to the picture when it's right in front of you. So don't believe everything that the furniture provider wants you to believe. Remember to look at the customer review.

Second, you don't get to try things out when you shop online. When it comes to furniture, looks are not everything. It also has to be comfortable and durable. Sometimes a few centimeters can be the difference between really comfortable and really uncomfortable. But you'll never know that unless you try things out. You have to be able to touch it, to feel it, to sit on it, to lean on it.

Thirdly, shipping costs can be high and the furniture might be damaged during the process. The big and famous offline brands already have sound customer service, so that when something comes up, all you need to do is just make a phone call and they will send people to help you. But online stores might not be able to do that. So you need to be more careful before making any purchase online. Don't hesitate to ask questions and be sure to look over those policies so that you understand, if there is something wrong with your furniture, who should be the one to take the responsibility and fix the problem. Should it be the furniture provider? Should it be the logistic company? Or should it be you, the customer? And how should the problem be fixed? What's the process for it?

In conclusion, calling online sources not trustworthy is obviously old school. Whether you should buy furniture online depends on what you're buying. If it's a sofa, you know, something that's big and has to be shipped as a whole piece and something that has to be very comfortable, then you may wanna consider buying it offline. But if it's just some small pieces or even accessories, then, of course, you can buy them online. There is better design and greater variety.

Yes, there are pitfalls to buying furniture online. But I think shopping offline is no better. Online, offline, they both play tricks on you. It's just that they play different tricks. For example, if you shop offline, you also have to deal with the salespeople throwing around fancy jargons, trying to brainwash you into believing that the furniture is better than it really is. I don't think that's any better than shopping online.

And right now, if you're serious about buying furniture online, then here is some advice for you. First, don't expect things to be unreasonably cheap, because the cost of raw materials, especially if it is solid wood, is so high that the furniture can't possibly be that cheap. Remember, the quality of your furniture is directly correlated with its price tag. Second, you may wanna check stores that focus only on a few types of furniture. If a store sells everything, it usually means it's good in neither of those things. Just like you'll never visit a restaurant that sells both noodles and steaks. Of course, the best-case scenario will still be to combine online and offline, that is, to do some comparison shopping online and then try things out offline. So maybe start by searching online for brands that really fit your aesthetics. And then see if they have any offline stores or any exhibition space in your locality. If they do, then you may want to give them a try. Thank you.
