NZBRiC Hosts Hon. Minister Todd McClay during CIIE 2025
This year’s 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) marked an important milestone in strengthening New Zealand’s commercial and government engagement in China. With a record number of New Zealand companies exhibiting, the New Zealand Business Roundtable in China (NZBRiC) was honoured to host senior government representatives from the New Zealand Government – including Hon. Todd McClay, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Trade and Investment, and Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On 8 November, NZBRiC and Kea New Zealand co-hosted Kiwi Drinks at the Bach – our largest Shanghai networking event to date, welcoming more than 200 guests to the rooftop of the W Hotel. Minister McClay joined the event and engaged directly with attendees throughout the evening, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting NZBRiC members operating in the China market.
The strong government presence also included Member of Parliament Nancy Lu, Ambassador Dr. Jonathan Austin, NZTE CEO Peter Chrisp, representatives from the Consulate-General in Shanghai, and other prominent officials supporting New Zealand’s commercial interests across China. The gathering offered members a unique platform to exchange insights and strengthen high-level connections at the close of a busy CIIE program.
Earlier in the week on 6 November, NZBRiC opened CIIE with Breakfast with the Ambassador, attended by New Zealand companies and visiting delegations. Ambassador Dr. Jonathan Austin shared perspectives on the New Zealand–China trading relationship, followed by a timely economic briefing from Dan Wang, China Director of the Eurasia Group. A CEO panel featuring leaders from Grin Natural, Zespri, MitoQ, and Synlait then ensued, discussed first-hand experiences and strategies for achieving long-term success in China’s dynamic market.
Across both engagements, a clear theme emerged: close collaboration between government and industry remains essential for New Zealand’s continued success in China. Members highlighted the importance of ongoing advocacy and representation to ensure aligned strategic priorities and navigate the opportunities offered by the China market.
A sincere thank-you to our partners, speakers, and sponsors – including ICBC New Zealand, The True Honey Co., Tribal Brands Asia, Office of Contemporary Art Aotearoa, and Ahi – for supporting this year’s CIIE program.
We look forward to continuing this momentum as we strengthen New Zealand’s commercial voice in China and enhance the connection between business, government, and community.
