According to data from Mexico’s central bank, bilateral trade between Mexico and China reached record levels in the first half of 2025. Imports from China totaled US$62.1 billion, while exports approached US$4.6 billion. Although the trade structure remains asymmetric, the continued expansion highlights the high degree of complementarity between the two economies within global value chains.
From January to June, imports from China rose 2.3% year-on-year, while exports to China declined slightly by 4.5%, reflecting Mexico’s growing demand for Chinese intermediate goods. As most of these imports are used in processing and re-exports, the pattern has reinforced Mexico’s role as a vital hub in international supply chains for more than two decades.
Since 2000, bilateral trade has grown more than twentyfold, surpassing US$110 billion in 2023. China has consolidated its position as Mexico’s second-largest trading partner. Research institutions note that this trend underscores the strong economic ties between the two countries while offering Mexico important opportunities to diversify industries and move up the value chain.
On the policy front, the Mexican government has announced measures to strengthen export capacity and promote import substitution in order to foster domestic industry development. For example, tariffs on certain footwear imports were adjusted this month to balance local manufacturing needs with international competition. At the same time, Mexico is actively attracting investment and innovation cooperation, aiming to transform its manufacturing strength into greater technological and innovation capacity.
Analysts believe that as global supply chains undergo realignment, Mexico and China not only have room to expand cooperation in traditional manufacturing and trade but also hold significant potential in innovation, technology, and sustainable development. For both countries, expanding bilateral trade and deepening industrial linkages will inject new momentum into their partnership.
