INTRODUCTION

RHIKNOWBOT is an automated design modelling program for built environments. Its applications are including but not limited to city planning, architectural design, landscape design and interior design. It aims to provide the mechanism for designers’ creativity on 2D drafting and automatedly transforming 2D information into 3D digital models that can be easily re-modified or manipulated along with any changes in the design processes.
RHIKNOWBOT is also a knowledge-based and component-based parametric modelling technology for constructing detailed models up to the level applicable to BIM and even carbon related green building design and construction. It helps designers efficiently explore design variations as well as store and accumulate design knowledge in digital formats that can be easily re-used on future projects.
RHIKNOWBOT offers unique technologies on massing constructs that allows instantaneous and intuitive interaction with key data sets of the projects.
Moreover, RHIKNOWBOT aims to provide a one-stop modelling solutions, reducing the needs of switching between various different programs. It also supplements some additional functions that designers may use daily.

An automatic and convenient tool for city road constructs in 3D. Designer draw midlines of roads and define the properties of their sectional layouts. The system automatically transforms them into detailed 3D models with supreme details of elements, including traffic lights, bus stops, trees and shrubs, asphalt road paving, sidewalk paving and curbstones and so on. Each element can be further customized as needed.

A comprehensive tool in massing constructs with three unique functions that can be worked together to build creative spatial design models. These key functions include parametric based curve editing function in which parameters can be updated by double-clicking on the curves, push and pull function in which a pop-up window of the façade facilitates drawing accurately in 2D and push and pull them to form solid models, and Boolean operation function in which building blocks can be added and subtracted.

The key concept of Projection function is to allow designers to draft in 2D and the system will automatically project such 2D formal data onto 3D design surfaces (objects) to realize the design in 3D. A reference surface of the 2D drafting is necessary so that the UV coordinates of the design drafting can be identified.

By double-clicking on the Sheet curve, a list of all elements on the sheet will pop-up for the ease of further editing the content. Designers can save the style to build up their standard booklet library for future reused.

RHIKNOWBOT is an advanced digital technology from MIT based on Professor Shouheng Chen’s computational research more than a decade ago. It has been frequently tested on practical design projects of Shouheng Design and Technology Inc. (SHDT), an advent-Gard design studio with building projects ranging from super large urban plannings to community constructs, large scale architecture and landscape projects to urban facilities and smaller scale sculpture makings.
RHIKNOWBOT promotes creative, automated and rational 3D modeling methods that can be easily applied to construct digital cities or metaverse. Its applications on AI are also foreseeable.
