Troubles with bubbles: Marangoni mysteries

Niels G. Deen

Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands

Particles, droplets and bubbles are encountered in various applications, ranging from food to energy. Just think of droplets in emulsions or the production of green hydrogen bubbles in water electrolysis. The fluid dynamics of droplets and bubbles can considerably change due to the presence of surfactants. That is, small concentrations of surfactants can accumulate on the bubble or droplet surface, changing their surface mobility. In this talk I will show our latest results trying to understand and describe these changes in surface dynamics (Marangoni mysteries). I will also explain what the practical consequences are (troubles with bubbles).
