事实上，不少外国人是不过圣诞节的，主要因为Christmas是纪念耶稣诞生。Christmas 一词是由 Christ（基督）和 Mass（弥撒）两个部分组合而成。  但犹太人不承认耶稣是救世主，甚至犹太教还认为耶稣不是圣贤。因此他们不过圣诞节，而是过光明节(Hanukkah)，也就不乐意听到“Merry Christmas”。
有关“Merry Christmas”起源的问题，其实现在还是比较模糊的。最早用“Merry Christmas”可以追溯至1534年，英国的罗马天主教主教约翰·费舍尔写给英国政治家托马斯·克伦威尔的圣诞祝贺信中。到了1843年，英国的伟大作家，《双城记》作者查尔斯·狄更斯在他的作品多次使用Merry Christmas，从此便流行起来。那么“Happy Christmas”是不是错的？
“Happy Christmas”也是正确的表达，不过只有伊丽莎白二世才这么说。因为英国王室向来讲究传统，而Merry有“微醉的”的意思，说Merry Christmas会有失女王的身份，所以每次都会说“Happy Christmas”，久而久之，在英国就有许多人和女王一样不再用merry这个词了。

The Christmas tree was not there from the beginning. A long time ago, ancient people would hang evergreen plants in winter to celebrate the return of the sun. Later, Germans began to bring trees decorated with candles and small ornaments into their homes during Christmas, which was the prototype of the modern Christmas tree. With the spread of Germany, the custom of the Christmas tree began to become popular in other European countries and the United States in the 19th century, and various new decorative styles and themes have been developed.

The image of Santa Claus can be traced back to a kind bishop named Saint Nicholas. Once, he learned that a family had no money to get through the winter, so he quietly threw gold coins down the chimney at night, and the coins just happened to fall into the socks hanging by the fireplace to dry. This is the origin of the tradition of hanging socks by the fireplace to wait for gifts.
圣诞老人的形象可以追溯到一位名叫圣尼古拉斯的善良主教。有一次，他得知一户人家没有钱过冬，于是在夜晚悄悄地将金币从烟囱扔进屋内，金币恰好落在了挂在壁炉旁烘干的袜子里。这便是将袜子挂在壁炉旁等待礼物这一传统的由来。

Santa’s reindeer are not ordinary reindeer; they can fly in the sky. The lead reindeer is named Rudolph, and his nose is naturally red and luminous, which made him isolated from the herd. However, on a foggy Christmas night, Santa’s sleigh encountered great difficulties while delivering gifts. At the critical moment, Rudolph stepped forward, and his bright nose, like a lighthouse, illuminated the way for the sleigh. Since then, Rudolph has become a hero, not only winning the respect of the other reindeer but also becoming Santa’s right-hand man.
