Starbucks to Use PP Lids to Replace Plastic Straws

Nowadays Europe and U.S. are focusing on the environment protection more and more. Some companies are considering limiting or even forbidding the use of disposable plastic products. McDonalds are developing biodegradable straws and integrated lidding cups. Seattle, where the Starbucks headquarters is located, declared a prohibition on the providing of plastic straws in restaurants and cafes from July 1. Violators will be fined.

Starbucks, the global coffee chain giant, announced on July 9 that it would ban the use of plastic straws in its 28,000 stores by 2020 in response to a campaign against disposable plastic products. After several months of test, the company confirmed the decision on twitter: the company will use a new type of PP lids to replace plastic straws. The lids will have opening and suction nozzle to drink. Compared with plastic straws, the new lids are large, easy to sort and easy to recycle. The new lids are the standard covers for some cold drinks now in stores in U.S. and Canada. Starbucks also offers straws made from biodegradable materials such as paper or starch for Starice and milk coffee blends in stores if requested.
