China Butadiene Supply Remained Stable in January
Up to now, there are 30 butadiene producers in China, with a total capacity of 4,059kt/a. The investigated ones include the total capacity of 650kt/a, 405kt/a, 1,815t/a, 530kt/a, 120kt/a, 369kt/a and 170kt/a, respectively in 5 producers of Northeast China, 3 producers of North China, 13 producers of East China, 3 producers of South China, 1 producer of Southwest China, 3 producers of Northwest China and 2 producers of Central China.
In January 2020, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry edged down to around 77.5%. According to SCI, the monthly output was around 263kt. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical continued to remain shut. The butadiene unit at Shandong Huayu Rubber was shut down in early January. Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia cut the operating rates slightly. Other butadiene units saw no obvious changes. In January, China’s butadiene supply edged down from last month. However, in East China, the import volume of butadiene was sufficient. The supply side failed to bolster the butadiene price.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in January 2020, accounting for around 87% of the total. As for production techniques, the operating rate of butene ODH units kept unchanged from last month. The operating rates at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia continued to go lower. The butadiene units at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology ran normally. The butadiene units at Shandong Kenli Petrochemical and Shandong Yuhuang Chemical were still in the downtime. The operating rate of C4 extraction units increased from last month. Most units ran normally, and the supply of domestic resources was relatively stable.
In February, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Shandong Huayu Rubber will continue to remain shut. Affected by the delay of downstream resumption time, the operating rate of some butene ODH units will continue to decline. The matched butadiene units of big ethylene projects will run at lower operating rates. As seen from newly added units, in early February, the butadiene units at Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical and Hengli Petrochemical run at 60% load. Overall, it is estimated that the operating rate of butadiene units in February will go lower from January.
