Butadiene Operating Rate Ramped up in Mar

Up to now, there are 32 butadiene producers in China, with a total capacity of 4,419kt/a. The investigated ones include the total capacity of 810kt/a, 405kt/a, 2,015t/a, 530kt/a, 120kt/a, 369kt/a and 170kt/a, respectively in 6 producers of Northeast China, 3 producers of North China, 14 producers of East China, 3 producers of South China, 1 producer of Southwest China, 3 producers of Northwest China and 2 producers of Central China.

Remarks: The butadiene capacity at North Huajin Chemical Industries is revised to 120kt/a

In March, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry dropped to around 71%. According to SCI, the monthly output was around 260kt in March. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Shandong Huayu Rubber continued to remain shut. Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry shut down their butadiene units temporarily in H1 of March. The butadiene unit at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology resumed normal operation in late March. Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical restarted its butadiene unit in late March. The matched butadiene units of ethylene projects began to resume normal operation in late March. Within this month, the butadiene unit at Hengli Petrochemical basically ran at full load. In late March, the butadiene unit at Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical also ran at full load. Overall, in March, China’s butadiene supply moved up from last month.

As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly edged up in March. Within this month, the butadiene units at Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical and Hengli Petrochemical ran at full load in late March. As for production techniques, the operating rate of butene ODH units was largely unchanged from last month. The operating rate at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical decreased slightly. Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia slightly uplifted its operating rate. The butadiene unit at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology resumed normal operation in mid-March. The butene ODH units at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Shandong Kenli Petrochemical and Shandong Yuhuang Chemical were still in downtime. The operating rate of the C4 extraction unit warmed up from last month. Domestic butadiene resources were sufficient.

In April, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Shandong Huayu Rubber will continue to remain shut. The butadiene units at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical will both maintain the normal operation. The 180kt/a butadiene unit at CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals will take maintenance in early April. Other butadiene units will see no adjustments. Overall, it is estimated that the operating rate of butadiene units in April will continue to go higher from March.
