2020 BD Import Volume Hit a New High
Introduction: In recent years, with the intensive release of China’s large ethylene projects, the butadiene capacity still remains in an uptrend. China’s butadiene self-sufficiency continues to improve. In this context, the import dependence degree of butadiene in China should decline year by year, but actually, the import volume of butadiene in China hit a historical high in 2020. Affected by the public health event in H1, 2020, the import volume of butadiene picked up notably due to the cost advantage, heavily weighing on China’s butadiene market. With the butadiene market running normally, the import volume of butadiene will be normal or even lower in the coming days.
From January to November 2020, the import volume of butadiene was around 430kt, hitting a 10-year high. Especially from June to August, the import volume of butadiene increased notably, and monthly import volume reached 78kt. In early 2020, the import volume of butadiene was at a high level. From March to April, the import volume went down to around 20-30kt. In Q4, with newly added capacity being released gradually and tight imported butadiene resources, the import volume of butadiene declined somewhat. The detailed import status was shown below.
